New Nexus 4 owner - 2 day impressions

I've never bought a single song through iTMS, and I never will. My only complaint about Google Play is that it doesn't -- for some inexplicable reason -- support OGG, which is my preferred music format. Nevertheless, all the MP3s that I've allowed to be transferred over have done so without the slightest problem. I have 1,418 songs posted there at present, and everything works flawlessly.

I got the phone two weeks ago , is been amazing but 8gb is not enough. I'vealready hit it. First. The is OS take leaves 5.6gb. And the phone acts funny with only 500 mob left. Use able space is only 5gb. Even taking little photos and video, its already 800 mb used. Audio books, and apps... I don't have any space for music. I'm an ***** for not getting 16gb, which I know I could live with.

I can't believe they can sell this for $300...

My MP3 library alone is 6 gigs. And vacation video eats up storage like candy.

For battery I guess I will just have to get a power pack. Not much else I can do, because I do not want to run it lean. All the claims of "omg battery life is so good" assume you are turning down screen brightness and basically running it lean. iPhone battery life claims are exactly the same thing. On the Rezound I never had to do that. Full brightness, GPS, 4G, everything on full all the time, and still over a day of battery with some to spare. Android Central people have been saying for years that SD and removable batteries don't matter, and they are completely wrong.

16 gigs feels really tight...I can't imagine what the people with the 8gig version do.

I do fine with 8gb. Tons of apps but I stream music and video when I want them. I still have 4.2gb free.

I suspect that part of your problems lie with being a TMo customer. TMo is great when you're outdoors in a large urban city. It's weak to terrible in all other situations. Your poor battery life could be due to the phone constantly trying to find a signal and switching between HSPA and EDGE. I'm in a suburban location. When I tried TMo I could sometimes get voice indoors but data was virtually nonexistent and only EDGE on the rare occasions it worked. It was a bit better outdoors but not by much. I switched to AT&T on Net10 and now I get excellent HSPA speeds even indoors. Usually 4-5mbps indoors. If you're not under contract, give Net10 a try with AT&T sims. You can buy the sims on eBay for $1 each. You can also buy $50 Net10 refills on eBay for $36-$38.

Maybe it's just me being old... Storage used to ALWAYS be at a premium. ALWAYS.

I just don't rip at that high a bit rate. I'm not playing the songs through a deluxe stereo setup with studio quality surround. It's portable with a tiny speaker or earbuds. I can't hear the difference between bit rates on that level.

You still have 2.5gb free. What's the problem?

How much music can you listen to in 24 hours?

All I'm saying is that there's this whining, poor-little-me tone in what you and many others have written where the Nexus 4 is concerned.

So any criticism of the Nexus 4 = whining? Am I allowed an opinion?

And speaking of choice, you did have a choice in what phone to buy.

Yes, I got the best choice available. That does not mean it is as good as it could be, or that it should be immune to criticism.

You have 16GB of fixed, non-upgradeable storage by your own hand; don't complain to us about the choice you made.

Who the hell asked you to even respond to the thread? I did not send you a private email complaining about my phone. If you don't want to hear it, just skip the thread. You're on a public forum. Participation is voluntary. It's a Nexus 4 forum and I posted an opinion about the Nexus 4. If it offends or annoys you, move on.

Thats not just T-Mobile. I experienced that on Verizon as well. It was annoying as hell, but i did not see any way to avoid it other than turning the phone off.

Yeah, I feel your pain. 8 gigs makes my skin crawl, heh heh. Even 16 feels cramped to me. I have had to delete photos and video to make some space.

Posting a thread on a public message board is an invitation for public comment. I commented. Deal with it.
Then deal with my response and stop being a crybaby because someone doesn't agree with you on something. No one is forcing you to read or post to "whining" threads. Exercise your precious libertarian free-will and skip the threads you think are a waste of your time.

Posting on a public board is an invitation, not a requirement. No one is forcing you to read or reply to anything.

I mean, c'mon, is music *soooo* important to you that every last second of your life has to be filled with it?
Actually, yes it is.

To the OP, I love the phone and agree with most of what you said except the bit about daytime visibility. Didn't read the whole thread but you must be rooted and running a custom kernel with the ability to tweak because my N4 isn't much good in direct sunlight.

And I stand by what I said earlier: do you have to be entertained every second of the day? Seriously? What in the world would you have done in the days before portable media storage (smart phone, MP3 player, portable CD player, portable cassette player)?

AM Radio. That's what I carried everywhere as a kid.
Yes. I need music all day. Not as entertainment, as inspiration and drive. Believe me when I tell you that for some reason, it's not a choice.

Really? Thats the thing I love about this phone...I can read it in direct sunlight with sunglasses...have never been able to do than on any of my previous phones. And it has very deep blacks despite this...it has the darkest blacks I have seen on a non-AMOLED device.

I ordered a 16gig one yesterday, just to be safe. my current phone has I think a 2gig internal and an 8gig sdcard, wich i used Link2SD to put half to the internal. I dont keep much music on the phone, and I never watch movies because the screen is so damn small and crappy looking.

I use it as a general storage device quite a lot actually, always have a USB cable on hand to move files with. with more storage and an awesome screen, I can see storage being a problem if you hoard your movies, but I would only ever keep 2-3 at a time on the phone, and use spotify/pandora for music.

so i guess what im saying is that lack of SDcard isnt really a problem, and I'm sure the battery concerns I have will be not so bad or not at all with this mystical franco kernal.

a phone full of win? can't wait!

The back and forth cheap shots and insults of whining, crying, telling people to post or not has gone on long enough.

Very simple leave the moderating to us, and either participate with respect to one another or don't participate at all.

Any further problems report the post and let us step in and handle it.

Thanks

It is not a mode. You simply tap-to-focus on a close object, and it will focus on it. Way easier than my Rezound's method.

I tried this on the GS3 and the photos sucked. But it works great on the N4. The Macro mode is as good as my Rezound's was, which is to say, the best of any phone I have seen so far.

I just replaced my Note 2 with a Nexus 4. After looking at huge new crop of Android phones the Nexus 4 made the most sense. As an iOS and Android user I prefer the speed and simplicity of stock android. The Nexus 4 gets far worse battery life then my iPhone 5 btw, I don't care about sd cards or removable battery's. sd cards are slow and u reliable and sealed batteries have more than proven themselves. The only time I would really want a removable battery is when traveling and you can't take them on airplanes. I'm glad I waited and got the latest 303 version which seems to be free of the quality control issues of earlier versions. Took them long enough. I still want LTE and hope the S 4 "Nexus" is not going to be our only Nexus option because price wise it's not great and I'm tired of Samsung and their cheap build quality. One of the ideas of the Nexus line is they are sold at cost to get greater acceptance of stock Android after all. Maybe the S4 is a stop gap until Google/Motorola comes out with a Nexus 5.
