After having an iPhone since I can remember when I decided i needed a new phone, while I loved my iPhone I got bored of the same ole same ole and the small screen size. Time for a change.

So got myself a Nexus 4. Not had it long so still getting used to it. But have a few questions I hope someone can help me with.

Is there a way you can put a folder in another folder?

Is there a way to organise the apps in the 'all apps' menu into folders?

When apps are running in the background is there a way to stop them all at once? Without having to 'click, hold, remove app from list' for every app?

I use whatsapp as my main messenger. With the quick reply pop up is there a way to hide the message and just show who it's from? As with the ChompSMS quick reply?

Is titanium the best backup app? Planning to root just for this really but if there's one just as good that doesn't require root access then I'll try that first.

I'm sure I'll think if more as I get used to the phone.

Thanks for any advice.

If you mean on the home screen, no.

I believe so. However, you need a custom launcher (home screen replacement) such as Nova Launcher.

Yes, you can do this with a task manager. I personally prefer the one built in to the Airdroid app (an app that allows you to wirelessly transfer data between your computer and your phone).

Sorry, can't help with this as I don't use whatsapp.

There's one called Helium backup (formerly Carbon) which can back up all your apps and app data. Not sure if it's as comprehensive as Titanium but I know it's really good.

I'm sure I'll think if more as I get used to the phone.

Thanks for any advice.
Good luck with your awesome new phone!

Thank you.

Will check out that backup app and download nova.

Few more questions.

How do I turn off push notifications? I like to manually check email, Facebook etc. is it app settings and disable notifications? Or does that still fetch them just not notify you?

Can rooting significantly extend battery life.

Does anyone know how I can transfer my SMS messages from my iPhone? I tried iSMS2Droid but whenever I selected the iPhone file it gave me an error saying the app had stopped. I'm not bothered about most of them but I have an SMS on my phone from my Mum who passed away a few months back. And whilst it saved on my PC and backed up on my iPhone. I want it on current phone.

Thank you.

The only way that I know of is to hit the multi-tasking button (to the right of the home button) and swipe them away to the right or left. About the backup, Helium is the only one I know of that doesn't require root. As for the other things, the above poster said most everything that I was going to say. Welcome to Android, my friend!

If you go to Settings>Apps You can choose whichever app you want to turn push notifications off for, and just uncheck the "Show Notifications" box under "Force Stop." That keeps them from popping up in your task bar up top.

I don't believe that rooting alone can extend battery life. You'll have to put a custom ROM or kernel on the phone to do that.

Don?t worry yourself over closing background apps. With 2GB of RAM and with how the Android OS manages its own resources, it?s a non-issue.

Regarding turning off push notifications, you can simply just turn off auto-sync. But I see no good reason to do this unless you?re on a very light data plan.

Sorry, what? This is confusing without context, what are you asking?

Edit: ok, the link you posted, for whatever reason, doesn't appear or work for me. Maybe someone else is seeing what you're trying to Ask about.

Sorry. I haven't posted any links. This was the question

Hi, welcome to the Nexus world! Let me help you as much as I can ...based on my experience with this phone so far...

>Is there a way you can put a folder in another folder?
This is currently not feasible (neither home screen nor app drawer allows for it). Neither stock nor custom launcher (Nova, Apex etc.) supports it.
Some cool things about Nova in case you are not aware of it...
-You can even create widgets and place them in the dock!
-You can assign swipe actions to the shortcuts located either in the dock or home screen.

>Is there a way to organise the apps in the 'all apps' menu into folders?
You can use Nova and create drawer groups which makes it convenient for me to quickly get to apps.

>When apps are running in the background is there a way to stop them all at once? Without having to 'click, hold, remove app from list' for every app?
Unless using a third party task killer (which I would not recommend) that has a check all feature, this is not possible from the stock ROM.
Trust me, 2GB RAM with Jelly Bean's efficient memory management...in "most" cases you would not have to kill apps (except for the misbehaving ones).
I have close to 220apps installed on my phone and my available RAM hovers at 1.1GB almost all the time..with about 30processes/services running...I still get through the day without battery drain issues! I do accept that I am a moderate user.

>I use whatsapp as my main messenger. With the quick reply pop up is there a way to hide the message and just show who it's from? As with the ChompSMS quick reply?
Nope. This is currently not feasible. You can either use the dashclock extension (or) use the default notification instead. But this is only going to indicate that you have a message and would NOT tell you who sent you the message.

>Is titanium the best backup app? Planning to root just for this really but if there's one just as good that doesn't require root access then I'll try that first.
I cannot say it is the best since its the only app I've ever used. All I can say is it is VERY reliable and has never failed me yet! I've seen some good reviews about non-root apps like carbon.
Perhaps you should try that.

Hope this helps!

If you are talking about the homescreen and app drawer then I dont think any of the most common launchers used allow you to do so, but the more expensive launchers do have this feature I believe. If you are talking about your files then you need a file manager such as astro or es file explorer.

Is there a way to organise the apps in the 'all apps' menu into folders?
You can do this with nova launcher prime

You don't have to hold on it and click remove app from list. You can just swipe them away. Many custom roms have a kill all button which will swipe away all the apps from the recents menu.

Dont think this is possible

Probably the most reliable and feature packed app. Helium can be used without root but I dont think its as good as titanium although it does have a more friendly UI.

Thanks for all the advice. It's greatly appreciated.

Only think now is how do I get my SMS messages across from my iPhone?

Try using Bump. It is available on both platforms.

Here's the link for iPhone https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/bump/id305479724?mt=8&at=10l3Vy
Here's the link for android https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...s?id=com.bumptech.bumpga&hl=en&token=bpeH3NI2

i did this very thing 2 days ago.
the app you mentioned doesn't work with iOS6 which is why it keeps failing.

i used a website to convert the sms database file into android XML, then used an app to import it onto nexus 4.
once i'm home i will dig out the links
