I am new to Android. I am an "under the hood" person when it comes to devices. I currently have a legacy phone (not activated), which I am using as a learning platform. Currently finances will not allow me to purchase a new phone.

So, ... given the following specs I want to know if this forum can help me with a device this old.

specs: Blu Studio 5.0e
Android version 4.2.2 jellybean

Thanks in advance for your replies,

Welcome to the forums. Nice handle by the way.

We have a knowledgeable community. I'm quite sure someone will chime in. Any specific question/issue?

gendo667,
Thanks for the reply and compliment on my handle.

My current issue involves accessing a flash drive via OTG. I have googled myself to he** (that very hot place) and back all week long before posting.

I have no idea what the size limitations are for external storage with version 4.2.2. Therefore, I am using the smallest flash drive at my disposal: 4GB. I am using an OTG (usbA to usbB) cable. The drive is formatted as fat32, using a Windows 10 machine. The video file was copied to the usb from a Windows 10 machine. The file works fine on the Windows 10 machine. VLC media player is installed on the phone.

The phone will not access the usb. Here is what I have already done:

verified that OTG is supported, using OTG? app
attempted to access using VLC media player with no files found
navigated: settings>storage to find no usb mount option
checked file manager to find no usb
navigated ES file explorer>local menu to find no usb
navigated settings>connections to find no usb
tried both cold boot and reboot both with and without usb plugged in
enabled developer mode

What is the next step to attempt?

Thanks for your replies,

Welcome to Android Central! Double check that the phone supports OTG with another app, like USB Host Diagnostics. I wouldn't be surprised if some apps gave you a false positive.

Those Blu phones, if I recall, were very budget-friendly but with that come some trade-offs. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't actually support OTG.

Thanks all for your replies. Before I start a new thread with a different topic, I want your advice for choosing the proper forum. The new topic is going to be related to the kernel(?) of the operating system. Specifically whether manually adding files to the phone's micro SD can be done from another device. I need to know if there will be a problem with links (or lack of links). The answer requires knowledge of system level coding.

Now you know why my user name is what it is. I'm getting ready to attempt to get under the hood and get my fingernails dirty.

Thanks in advance for your advice,
dirty_fingernails.
