New to Android

What cloud backup do you use for your phone? Is Google Cloud any good? Does it backup all data or just pics and videos? Coming from the ICloud so I'm looking for something similar.

Google Drive doesn't backup anything automatically--it acts like a hard drive in the cloud for you. Google apps will all sync automatically to your Google account in the cloud, so things like Gmail, Calendar, Google Music, and of course Google Drive will essentially backup automatically in the cloud when you make any changes. There is a feature called Google+ Auto-Backup that will automatically backup any photos you take to your Google+ Photos albums in the cloud.

However, 3rd party apps won't necessarily backup data to your Google account. Some will backup or sync data to their own cloud server (like Facebook, for example), but if a whole backup is important to you, there are number of good apps and services available. Helium is one of the most popular, and doesn't require rooting.

Thanks for the detailed response. So I'm using gmail, google music and google calendar so that's backing up automatically? I can set up back up on the camera app and I'm good to go for the most part? What about my apps?

Yes, if you have Auto-Sync on, and you have all of those Google apps set to sync in the Settings>Accounts-Google>[your Google account] menu, then they will automatically and (almost) immediately sync with your Google account in the cloud.

In the Photos app, tap the Menu button, then Settings, then Auto Backup. If you turn that on, then any photo you take with your camera will get uploaded to your Google+ Photos in the cloud (previously known as Picasa), to the Auto Backup folder. You can set it to upload only when you have a wi-fi connection, in case you have a limited data plan.

As I mentioned before, other 3rd party apps may or may not sync to their own server in the cloud. So you can use a backup app like Helium (see the link in my previous post).

Most Google apps like Gmail and Calendar don't have a setting to sync in wi-fi only, since the amount of data that is synced is generally low. For people who have very limited data plans and have to conserve as much data as possible, it's easy to toggle off Auto Sync or mobile data when you don't need it.

I use dropbox because I have free space from previous phones and that backs up photos and videos. There is a setting for WiFi only in dropbox as well.

Take a look at drive photo uploader in the play store for uploading of your photos. I know that the auto backup, will back them up to google+, but that actually reduces the size of the photos to a maximum of 2048 (I believe). This software will let you auto upload into your google drive, and therefore keep the original size of the files

In addition to the backups offered for all the Google services mentioned in previous posts there is a G3 specific built in backup setting

Didn't know of that setting. Reckon that might help if having to do a factory reset for a reason

No! You can set it to upload full sized pictures at the photos settings. It just takes space from your Google account. (15gb)

Really ... didnt realise that .. from what I read before, it didn't have that option. Where do you find that?

I use the 2048 size auto-backup to Google+ and also use Dropbox auto-backup for full size images to save on my computer. That way I have a full set of images stored to Google+ photos without storage limitations and a full size version to keep backed up locally on my computer.

Cheers for pointing me into the settings, I can see that now. Although, I actually quite like having them in Drive ... it is just an easy storage area, and as it all counts towards the same quota .. suppose it does not really matter

Easier way: Photos app > Right top > Settings > Auto backup > Photo size > Full size and there you can change the resolution. See the screenshot.

If you on on Verizon, they have the new Cloud which replaces Backup Assistant+. They give you minimum of 5GB...$2.99 per month for 25GB. If you have migrated to More Everything, you get 25GB as part of plan. Automatically backs up Pictures, Videos, Music, Documents, Call Logs, Texts (not to beginning of time) and of course Contacts (if stored on phone...but I use Gmail for contacts and Calendar...easiest way to backup Calendar; if you stored Calendar entries on phone, you need another app such as Super Backup). Runs on Wi-Fi, and is as close to iCloud that Android could be. Get a new phone or replacement? Download the Cloud on the new phone, and restore your content. It's pretty awesome. Careful with those intimate photos...lol....delete pictures on phone...they remain in the Cloud. I use ColorNote app which backs up to SD card and to Gmail (that's what I use) and others.

There is something better for free!

If you log in with your g3 to the box.com app you get 25gb for free! (Otherwise it's 15.)
If you don't get it you have to write a mail to their CS and they will add it immediately.

Well, changed my upload of pics, to upload using the photos app into Google+, and noticed a function I did not no about. In the Google Camera application, you are able to create photosphere pics. I always liked this, but when they are uploaded to Google+ and viewed using the Photos app, it unlocks the use even more. I love how you are able to view around them, as if you are there. If you have used it, you will know what I mean .... slightly harder to describe, than to see it. But rather than it being a solid pic, it becomes more interactive

I personally think that Dropbox on the PC is great and on an Android phone is complete junk.
