New to EVO a few weeks should I Root?

Hello All
I am a new guy here with a EVO 4g had a BB for years
Like the EVO alot so far
This is my work / home landline replacement so if I root I need a great daily driver ROM like 2.3.x
Sense works fine
Need the GPS , cam. and soon on also no 4g here but due travel so need it too

or should I just hang out till Sprint updates it?

Rooting is the way to go, IMHO. With root you can install all the custom ROMs and use the free wifi hotspot apps. I have had a lot of problems with getting the GPS to work with the AOSP ROMs, but a lot of 2.3.3 ROMs with Sense are out now, so my GPS issues are all gone! It's nice to have the freedom to run different ROM, just to be able to check out new features or newer versions of SW. The Sprint update for the EVO is still unannounced, so the push date is just speculation at this point. More than likely it will happen around the time the EVO 3D is released in a effort to keep older customers happy if they aren't going to upgrade. But why wait for Sprint to release an update when you can root and run the newer versions now??? There may be some bugs here and there, but not anything that makes the phone unusable. Some ROMs have lots of issues where a lot of the featured don't work at all, so if you go the root route make sure to read up on the ROM before you load it up.

I would argue that rooting is not the way to go for *everybody*. It depends on what you want to do. It's like deciding whether or not you are happy with Windows or Mac or want to venture to the Linux side.

I had my phone since the first day they came out and didn't root until 3 weeks ago. Why? Because I wanted to know the ins-and-outs of the Evo BEFORE rooting. If you just got the phone, I suggest using it, as is, for at least a month. During this month, read about the different rooting methods here and at other forums - I would also highly suggest you hit up YouTube, they have great vids showing how to root! Do a lot of homework first and make sure that you're able to root, know the Android terminology, know what a nandroid back up is and, know WHY you want to root; don't just do it thinking you're going to unlock some magical, untapped force within your phone because you won't.
