New to rooting, just rooted 2.2, some questions.

Okay, before you all yell at me, yes I did read the forums and I've done my research, but I am still confused. I was a pro at hacking my BlackBerry, so it won't take me long to get up to speed on rooting with Android.

Now, here we go. I've done my research and from everything I've read, most of the rooting stuff is for prior to unrevoked 3, which simplified the rooting process. That is what I used, unrevoked 3.

Here we go with the questions.

1) What do ROMs do? From what I understand, it's the version of an OS that has been tweaked to the creator's liking. If I am correct, then what ROM do you guys like and why?

2) The instructions for removing the Sprint Bloatware seems to be for the method before unrevoked 3 came out. Should I wait for an easier method to come out or is that not possible? I am trying to save as much battery life as possible, and I am pretty sure all this crap that keeps turning on by itself is killing the battery life, so I'd like a better handle of what goes on in my phone's background (thus superuser permissions).

3) I love to take screenshots, so what screenshot program do you recommend? I have tried ScreenIt, Screenshot, and CaptureIt, and when I send a screenshot to a friend, it shows up grainy. It's nothing like sending a screenshot from a SideKick or a BlackBerry. Even iPhone has better quality when sending screenshots. Is it the program or is it just my phone shrinking it to fit an MMS? If so, how to fix that?

4) Any recommended apps to use now that my phone is rooted?

5) Anything else you want to point out, tips or advice, now that it's rooted? So far, all I did was put in the screenshot program, and that was it. I'd like to go further, but I'd like to see what feedback I get from the Android community before going any further.

Thanks guys, you're a great community and I love reading these threads. It's still all confusing to me, but I'm starting to somewhat get the hang of it.

There was a list of apps somewhere (I know where to look) that are safe to uninstall and ones that are NOT safe to uninstall (such as stock, weather, etc). Does that list still apply with unrevoked 3?

Anything that Says HTC... or Sprint...

do you see Rosie?

Yea thats def deletable

;)

HAHA... Dont delete those Sprint sure just read what they are first...

To be honest I haven't really messed around with removing bloatware since I've strictly been using Baked Snack. All of the bloatware is already removed with that ROM aside from Sprint TV (which doesn't work now for some reason).

As for your other questions I'll give them a shot but I'm pretty new to this stuff too.

I like Baked Snack but it's the only one I've used. The main reasons for me to root were to get snappier performance, better battery life, remove sprint bloatware, and get free wifi tether. All of those are provided with Baked Snack. I will definitely check out Cyanogen 6 once they get 4G working.

I've used ShootMe and the results look excellent.

4) Any recommended apps to use now that my phone is rooted?

Titanium Backup (paid version), Quickboot, ROM Manager, Fps2D are some that I've grabbed after rooting.

Once you get the hang of flashing ROMs I would check out a theme to really make your phone stand out. Just looking through this thread made my eyes pop.

Agree with marko... Baked Snack 1.7 is a pretty darn good ROM.... I use that one as my sense ROM and I have also been using Vaelpak as my nonsense ROM (If you want to try a ROM with out HTC Sense) For the same reasons marko mentioned is why I rooted... I stayed away from CM6 for the same reason as well... NO 4G at this time....

Titanium Backup and ROM manager are two programs I love as well.. Specially if your going to start trying out some different ROM's and theme's.... Both make life a heck of a lot easier...

Good luck....

Just for future reference, the screen on the Evo, (like most LCD screens) burns precisely as much battery while displaying an all-black screen, as it does when displaying an all-white screen. AMOLED screens are the ones that use less power while displaying black.

The looking awesome part is still good, though. :)

Well at least it won't be so dang bright when I reboot. That white screen felt like an atom bomb exploded whenever I rebooted at night. :D

That is funny because I remember when the EVO first came out one of the "Battery Saving" methods listed was to use a dark or black background to save some battery life...

Heck it might have been a posting on here some where....

Got to love it.....

^Whoops. I wasn't rooted back in June so that thread was probably one that I kept overlooking.

The sarcasm wasn't directed towards you at all but rather some site publishing that article today as if it were a new trick. When I read it I thought to myself .... what will they publish next, an article that 2.1 on the EVO was rooted? Lmao!
