New To Rooting: Please Walk Me Through Rooting With Z4Root

Ok, well I have had my DX since "opening day" and I think I am ready to expand my palette so to speak, and root my phone. First of all, should I use z4root? That seems to be the easiest/safest rooting method.

Before I root, do I need to back up anything, and how do I go about doing that? Once rooted, what can/should I do right away?

Can someone explain what custom roms will do? Is it basically just a theme change? And how does overclocking work?

Once rooted, does my phone automatically speed up, or do I have to overclock it?

Please guys, if you can kind of hold my hand through this process, I would really appreciate it. Last thing I would want to do is ruin my $200 phone. Thanks so much!

You don't need to back anything up before rooting, but you should backup after rooting. Here are some apps that I recommend:

Droid X Bootstrapper - lets you make a nandroid backup. This is a complete backup of all system settings/ringtones/messages/apps and their settings...everything. There is a video on youtube that shows how to use it.

Rom Manager - makes it easy to install custom ROMs. The paid version will also install any premium ROMs (I recommend it). The ROMs will remove some or all of the moto blur (depending on which ROM you install. I love the Apex 1.0 that you can install from the premium version of ROM Manager. The ROMs can make you phone a bit faster and the battery last longer because your not running all the moto junk.

DX/D2 Overclocker from Unstable Apps will let you overclock your X. I run mine at 1.2 mhz and it's smooth, stable and fast.

Titanium Backup will backup all apps and there settings. Very usful if you wipe your phone with a factory re-set and want some or all of your apps with their settings back. The premium version also lets you freeze any bloatware that don't want to run without having to delete it.

SetCPU will let you adjust your processor speed depending on criteria that you establish, like 300 mhz when the screen is off, or 700 mhz when your battery is below 30%. This can be a big battery saver.

If you're not already running it, I also recommend LauncherPro. It does not require root, but it will make your home screens much smoother and more responsive.

You are correct the chinese version is the only one on the Market, I knew it might get pulled again (This isi second time)... You can download it from the original developers site if the app has been removed...

Nice. Just snagged it. Now how do I back it up so I never lose it?

Before I rooted I used..my backup(no root needed to use that) to back it up , it's also in the market, after I rooted I also use titanium backup,but that was how I did I guess you could root get titanium backup and just save it that way
