Hey guys,

Just bought a new DNA from eBay that's coming in tomorrow. I am coming from a GNex so I know I am in for a hugeeeeeeee change. Can you guys explain exactly what S-Off is? Do I need it to unlock the bootloader/root/flash custom roms? How much different is flashing roms than on a Nexus device (I'm assuming much more difficult). From what I gather if you have the newest OTA you can't S-Off/unlock the bootloader? Am I way off?

Anything else I should know? Thanks everyone!

You are right about the bootloader. We are still waiting for someone to crack it, but hopefully soon. The DNA is a great device. I've never rooted or anything of the like, so I can't advise you on that. But I like to think the DNA community is a pretty civil one, so if you ever have any more questions, don't be afraid to ask!

Thanks!! So I'm assuming if somehow the DNA I open up doesn't have the OTA I'll be able to unlock the bootloader?

That is true, the old unlocking method still works with those phones that didn't accept the ota. However I have heard that phones shipping out now have the update preinstalled. But theres always a little bit of luck, so hopefully It is with you :-)

Yeah I figured! Although I bought it off eBay so who knows when it came out of the factory for Verizon, supposedly it hasn't been used so hopefully it is the old firmware!

Hopefully you get one without the update, there is also a company called jtag that people have been sending their phones to and they will open your phone up and unlocked it for a small cost (think it's around $30-$40) downfall is you without your phone a few days. There are a few threads over at xda where you can get more info on this. Welcome to the DNA club :)

So is it proven that they can indeed unlock it?
