New updates, not ICS

I looked Wifi sleep policy and "never" was selected. The next setting below that is Best Wifi performance (says may consume more power) which is not checked. If i check that box, would that keep wifi turned on when phone goes idle?

I believe that should be happening regardless of whether that box is checked.

It sounds like you're having the same issue as me then. Do you have the same router?

Sorry to keep veering off topic (Phil did hit the nail on the head in his post about the RUU though) but i only lose wifi connection when my phone is idle, not when i'm using it. I have to turn wifi off/on to get internet access again.

Ok that's a new wrinkle, and may actually be very same issue I used to have...

Try installing an app called "Advanced WIFI lock" (free version works fine). Honestly only setting I have on it is "enabled" and I haven't dropped wifi since I installed it.

Those are correct settings. Don't mess with that "performance" settings, apparently that extends the range of devices wifi slightly (use it if your access point signal was weak), but does eat up battery like crazy. Probably will not help your problem.

Now, back on topic...

I'll give this a try this weekend. Haven't installed an RUU in forever! Don't have time to set my phone all back up during the week though, so hopefully someone else tries it before this weekend so I'll know if it kills something.

I honestly wouldn't bother unless you have a really good reason...seems like doing a full RUU install just isn't worth it for a few bug fixes.

I agree with Phil. RUU not worth it for minor bug fixes. It was different using RUU to escape issues under Froyo. I'll wait for OTA on this update. Not sure about ICS when it leaks. GB on TBolt has been great. No need to risk messing it up right now.

I don't think the router is the problem (or at least my router). I think it's the "Best Wifi performance" option on the phone. I turned on wifi, then i put my phone down and let the screen turn off. I waited 30 min's (way more time than it normally take for it to lose connection) and then i picked up the phone. I opened the Market and internet browser and still had connection.

I just wish vzw would allow users to refuse updates if they want to.

They used to (and maybe still do at times depending on the content of the update), but I'm guessing the reason they usually do not allow you to refuse the update is because:

1. Policy changes. For example, when MR2 update rolled out, removing free mobile hotspot with it.

2. Major bug fixes. Verizon is responsible for supporting your device, it only makes sense that they would want you running their most updated software. If you wanted to opt out of Verizon's support (and assume the risks involved) you can always root and manage the device yourself. Granted, VZW doesn't actually give you that option, but it does exist. (This is why I never fully understand why folks try to install updates on rooted devices, but that's a different thread for a different day).

For what it's worth, I am NOT a defender of all of Verizon's practices, but it's kind of a "have your cake and eat it too" scenario... you can't really expect them to support your device if they can't control the software running on it.

This is an issue with the phone. I've been having the same issue here at home, I'm using a Linksys router WRT54gs and at time when my phone sits idle I loose the internet connection; connection to router is still active. My girlfriend has a newer Linksys router (bought last xmas) and I never have the issue at her house, or anywhere else I use a WiFi connection.

Something with the phone and possibly linksys router's (possibly older routers) I haven't been able to figure it out. I have read other places that state linksys router's though.

Guess I'll be the first to give this a try. Loading it now. There's new radios in it too. Will report back in a bit..... All the brave souls that used to try these must have moved on.

Install and re-setup went smoothly. 4G speeds are about the same for me, around 10mbps. GPS working fine with the new radios. Time will tell if the dialer bug is gone or not. Not sure what else is changed, nothing that jumps out at me.

Ok, i've taken a 180 on this. Turning on the wifi performance setting prevented losing wifi (or could have been coincidence, can't be sure) but Pete was right. The wifi performance setting on the phone was draining the battery like crazy. Even if it wasn't a coincidence, it's not an ideal solution so i turned it off. I do have a linksys router and i was looking at the settings. There was a "QoS" setting (can't remember what the letters mean) that is supposed to improve the signal for wireless devices on the network. All is well so far.

EDIT: Still having the same problem...the hell with it, i give up.

Thanks for the feedback! I've been meaning to flash it, but haven't been able to download it until late last night after work. The initial download sites were so slow, but the third mirror Android Police added to their original post worked. I'm going to try to flash it tonight and will report back. :)

I don't think there's much risk for the stock Tbolts. The rooted Tbolters have to worry about losing root access.

Are you rooted?

Ok, finally got it flashed. No issues in the process and all is working normally as it was before (including voice mail notification). Only thing really noticeable is that it locks onto 4GLTE immediately after the main radios (voice) show connection bars. Also, the signal strength appears stronger (lower db reading). Speed tests are about the same as before though. Will give it some time and report back if there is anything notable. :)

A couple observations; battery life on standby appears to be a bit better, sipping even less than before. I usually lose about 5% overnight (7-8 hours), but last night it only dropped 3%. Second, there is a new setting called "App associations" under Menu, Settings, Applications. It allows you to change what application to use for certain functions:

(I'm guessing the number of entries for each may vary depending on what apps you have installed)
Phone Number (Dialer): one entry - Phone
Email address: two entries - Gmail and Mail
Physical address: two entries - Maps and VZ Navigator
Web URLS: one entry - Internet
Map address: four entries - Footprints, Internet, Maps, VZ Navigator
Streaming link: one entry - Streaming Media Player
Online audio download by webview: two entries - Streaming Media Player and TuneWiki
Online video download by webview: one entry - Streaming Media Player

Another observation; under Menu, Settings, Applications, Running services; my memory used is approx. 30-40MB lower (currently at 148MB, 379MB free) than it was before, even with all the same apps installed. Improved memory management?

And finally, ran some more speed tests here at the house (yesterday was at work) and consistently getting higher readings than I did before flashing; approx. 20 down and 15 up with a ping in the mid 150's.

I am trying this now, does the phone hang and checking...[pg05img.zip] for a real long time?

It's not too long, overall the process took approx. 15 minutes. As long as you see it progress through each step, you're good. If memory serves, it updates the radios first, reboots, then updates the OS.

Edit: after it's all done, be sure to either delete the PG05IMG.zip file off the SD card or move to some other directory so in the future when you try to go into the boot loader it doesn't see the file and automatically attempt to flash the phone again (although at some point it prompts you to confirm before proceeding). But just a preventative measure/best practice. :)

Battery life does seem a bit better for me now. Not sure if its because of a clean install of the operating system or the new software but i'll take it.
