New use for Nexus 7

Like many other people on this forum, my N7 2012 is so slow, it is basically not usable. However, I found a great use for it - night clock. This stand looks like it was made for the N7. Before I did this, my N7 was just sitting on the shelf. Now it is very useful!

I have 2 2012 Nexus 7's running lollipop 5.0.2, they run pretty well - almost keep up with my Nexus 9.
have you tried to clean install of 5.0.2?

No I haven't. I was going to do that, but I didn't know how to stop Google from automatically downloading all my apps. To say it is slow now would be an understatement.

I'd give it a try, download wugstoolkit on your laptop and simply unlock your bootloader that'll wipe everything then you can relock the bootloader or root your device. when you power the device on it'll ask you if you want to install all the old Google Apps just say no.

No I haven't. I was going to do that, but I didn't know how to stop Google from automatically downloading all my apps. To say it is slow now would be an understatement.

I did a Factory Reset on my N7 after struggling with both 5 and (marginally better) 5.0.2 - during the process there was the opportunity to choose to do the Reset alone (full clean install) or Reset with the restoration of all your apps from backup. I used the backup version and the result was a N7 that is stable and operable, but hardly what it once was. I imagine a clean install might alleviate that somewhat, but fear that 5.x.x is, essentially, buggered for devices that aren't built with it pre-installed.

I did a factory reset today. I only loaded one app - Giant Clock. It is much better now - at least it is usable. In any case, it works fine for what I want it for - a Night Clock. I have a lot of other newer tablets I use for daily drivers...

I use my Nexus 7 for first thing in the morning web browsing, then I transition to the Nexus 9 around 6pm till bed.

My N7 is mostly OK on 5.0.2 after doing a factory reset. For bedside "clock radio" purposes, I'm still using a Sony Dash, a neat little device which Sony put out a few years back and almost immediately completely lost all interest in developing / supporting / acknowledging that they ever manufactured them or that anyone ever spent money to buy one.

I had the Dash too, but it stopped working a long time ago. It had a nice screen but otherwise worthless. The only reason I got it, was to get rid of some points I had accumulated with some card I had. I'm sure glad I didn't actually pay cash for it...
