New Virgin phone, Motorola Triumph | JULY19 | $300

I would say probably not. The newer Optimus V's with the.5 baseband and froyo 2.2.2 have had the wireless tether option blocked. If you try to enable a wifi hotspot, out disables your 3g connection then gives an error message.

Good point i have the older one 2.2.1 that worked with quick settings.it

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the the Spice Mi-410 is also a rebranded Huawei X6, just as the Triumph is. I found this brief review. It'll be interesting to see how similar the phone is to this. Also in the video review it states there is a LED notification.

There are some differences, namely in antenna (CDMA 1xRTT/EVDO vs. Tri-band GSM GPRS/EDGE/HSPA+) and the shape of the rear camera (the Spice is square-shaped while the Triumph's is more round)

I'm curious as to why you expect the Black to suck. From what I've read, it performs fine with some slight lag occasionally. And I would actually gander a guess and say the Optimus UI is what's causing that occasional lag on the Black, and Virgin Mobile only allows stock Android. I see no reason why it should lag at all. But obviously it won't outperform the Triumph. The Triumph's Snapdragon processor is known more for performance while the OMAP processor the Black uses is more power efficient. Still though, with nothing but stock Android to push around, neither of these phones should lag.

Personally I think you should at least wait for the Triumph to come out and see what the verdict on it is before you go with the Optimus. If it turns out bad, you can fall back on your sit back and wait plan with the Optimus. If it does turn out to be a good phone, you'll be glad you waited for the extra power and features the Triumph brings. Of course, I suppose you COULD buy the Optimus and see how the Triumph turns out. If you end up wanting the Triumph you could always send the Optimus back since it would be well within that 30 day trial period.

Well, I've seen enough reviews of the Black to know that it simply isn't what I want, especially not when compared to the Triumph. I prefer the Triumph's form factor and its specs over the Black, which is admittedly comparable; however, it's not so enough to convince me that it's worth waiting for.

Look at what I just found out the triumph Is going for 199 and the up in plans

Virgin Mobile $25 Unlimited Plan To Increase To $35

That article is mince. First off, according to the leaked training manual that this is taken from, the top plan is going down by $5, not up. The current rate can be easily checked by anyone with an internet connection.

Secondly, the same document they seem to be using lists the Triumph for $299.99, not $199.99

The same place they got the picture from about the plans, has this on the next page.

So existing customers will be grandfathered unless we change plans... can we change phones (say from OV to Triumph) and stay wtih the $25 plan.

I don't know if their really gonna raise their rates but if they do I'm sure existing customers will be grandfathered in. even if they block the wifi tethering, if the triumph can be rooted then it will have tethering enabled shortly after.

if you get the triumph you need to get on the $35 plan. read that from a customer rep email

They're saying that the plan go into effect on the 20th but the Triumph comes out on the 19th. So if you get it on the 19th and activate it you should be fine.

"Hello Dex,

Thanks for contacting Virgin Mobile Customer Care. First, let me extend my apologies for any inconvenience this has caused.

To address your inquiry, with the phone that you currently have you will be able to keep the plan that you are using, but when upgrading phones you will probably need to change your plan given that new phones are designed to be activated with specific plans.

If you need additional assistance, feel free to let us know how we can assist further or contact us at 1-888-322-1122 (or *VM from your handset). You can reach us Monday through Sunday from 4am-9pm PST.

Someone just asked @VMUCare about upgrading phones and keeping the $25 plan on twitter... this was their response:

"We will provide you with an update as soon as we receive this information. ^SB"

I know Motorola's not generally good with having unlocked bootloaders on their phones (though I've heard that they plan to change this gradually), but I've never really understood the implications of this.

I assume it has some effect on the ease of rooting or something? Could someone please explain? Thanks.

From what I understand, if you can't get to the bootloader, you can't upgrade the phone to Gingerbread or an entirely different ROM. You can only modify the existing ROM.

Meh. That's rather off-putting to hear. Can the bootloader be unlocked? Hopefully, if not, Motorola will pull through on its promise to let off the locking.

Then again, I mean, why would they lock the Triumph? It's a prepaid phone on Virgin Mobile for goodness sake. I can maybe understand the incentive on the higher end ones, but not this.
