New Virgin phone, Motorola Triumph | JULY19 | $300

Well Virgin Mobile DID say they weren't too fond of the idea of people rooting their phones. On second thought, it seems fairly likely that the bootloader might be locked to help prevent people from enabling the wireless hotspot on the Triumph. Especially after what happened with the Optimus.

Even with a locked bootloader roms can still be developed, and that'll give us wifi hotspot. Just no custom kernals, and hit/miss on recoveries.

Yes but it makes it more difficult. The average user won't be able to abuse the hotspot on the Triumph if it takes some challenging hacking just to do so. With the Optimus all you had to do was download an app from the Market. With roms and a locked bootloader to get through, it should filter out a lot of the people who would otherwise abuse the hotspot in ways such as replacing their entire home internet with it. I think it is a safe bet to say that most people who go through the trouble of installing a custom rom are smart enough to know the consequences of abusing the hotspot. If that's the case and a lot of the people with Optimuses upgrade to the Triumph, we could see some slight relief on the network. And then have it get beat down again once people from T-Mobile switch over here.

That is a misconception. Root access will give the ability to use a wifi hotspot. But that is just a ad-hoc IIRC. On the DX it took some hacking around to enable the real hotspot feature like we have with the Optimus.

The more and more I think about it, I will stick to my Optimus V, just too many variables with this new phone. I truly do dislike Motorola that much.

Regarding the locked and signed bootloader. You better believe its gonna be just like the most recent Motorola phones. VM has made it pretty clear they dont want people rooting and enabling things like the hotspot feature.

Was planning to get the Triumph, but am very intrigues by the Black... wish we knew when it was coming out.

They probably won't release the date till a week our so after the triumph is released so that people don't hold off. That way you buy the triumph and then some people gotta have the latest so they buy the black as well.

pre-ordered my triumph today :D tired of my optimus v, only had it for 1 month n about 2 weeks... sick of it already... goin on craigslist

You must have some serious impatience. I've had my Optimus since it came out and I've never been unhappy with it. Maybe you need to have owned the Intercept for at least 10 minutes before you can truly appreciate the OV.

Anyways, if we go by the pattern VM set up (it seems like we get an Android phone every 5 months), we should be seeing the Black sometime in December. The Christmas season would seem like a perfect time to release the Black. Not only does it have those specs that are (keep in mind the average non-techy buyers' point of view) nearly identical to the Triumph, it has that sleek and thin comfortable design, that really nice and bright NOVA display, and an that LG and Optimus branding that just about everyone knows and loves. If VM released that thing during the biggest buying rush of the year, I could see it doing WAY more than just flying off shelves.

But then again, if our favorite collection of Virgins really wanted to maximize profit (and we know they do), they would also have to attract the more careful Triumph owners as well. The only way to do that would be to release something with upgradeworthy specs. Probably something like the Huawei Glory has. Christmas time would also seem like the best time to release something a little more price heavy since that is when people tend to spend a lot more than usual. And if they DO have a higher price, who knows, we could (though it's a long shot) get a nice device from HTC. But that's probably pushing it a bit.

Whatever comes out, I will probably end up grabbing both the Triumph and whatever the latest and greatest is by Christmas. Even though I'm more aware of companies' marketing ploys, I can't help but go for an upgrade whenever it's available. Guess I'm not as smart as I act. Well, as the saying goes: Curiosity considerably lowered the financial status of the technological cat. Or something like that.

so basically, if money is not a concern, is there anything about the triumph that ISN'T better then the optimus? i mean the spec sheet is better

Off the top of my head:
  • Same amount of RAM
  • Worse battery (1400 mAh in Triumph vs. 1500 mAh in Optimus; it'll probably take an additional hit with the larger screen and higher-clocked CPU)
  • Triumph may have a locked bootloader
  • No clear upgrade path to Gingerbread (whereas some of Optimus's European cousins already have it, and the source code is released)
  • No physical camera button or voice dialer button
  • Harder to remove microSD card (have to remove battery cover)
  • Capacitive instead of physical buttons (this one is subjective)
  • Unattractive squarish design (again, subjective)

Would they want to wait that long to release the Black though? That phone 4-5 months old already... if they wait another 5 months, it just makes it that much more dated, specs farther behind other phones, etc. As quickly as the phone market moves, I would think they would want to get it out as quick as possible.

That's what I'm hoping anyways. I think I would prefer the Black to the Triumph.

Also, interesting to note that the Black was certified for Vm on April 12, 2011... almost 2 months ago.

found this too.. meh:

"LG's confidentiality request for the Sprint version has photos and other details becoming public half a year after the initial April filing. As such, it's probable that the Black will be available in or before October"

If they wait that long, it will be a Optimus V replacement and around $130. Anything more and they may as well just not bother. That leaves them with a gap to fill though as I can't see the Intercept sticking around that long for the mid ground and if the Triumph comes down by then, they have no high end.

VM knows they have a captive audience, but that is stretching things.

On the other hand, usually once a phone is announce for VM, it's usually not that long before we get it. It was only a month or two after we heard of the Optimus before we got it, same for the Triumph. My guess is end of summer and expect either the Intercept or the OV to be retired. Probably the Intercept, which gives a decent indication of estimated price ($180-220?), though it could kill of the Curve.

I switch to VM a little under two months ago.. I had iPhones with tmobile for years.. my optimus v is really laggy and the battery.. dont get me started with the battery. all i do is text and check email and the battery gets super hot and drains quickly. got a replacement battery from VM, same thing.. maybe it's a defective phone, but either way, i need a change... i don't really like LG phones, so i'm not worried about the optimus black.

Have you actually done anything to improve your phone or is it completely stock? If you're still using the stock launcher and the stock browser then yes it is going to be laggy. You'd be surprised how much that bloatware takes a toll on performance. This is an Android phone, not a an iPhone. You actually have to put some effort in and customize it. Download Launcher Pro from the Market, download Opera Mobile or Mini, root your phone, remove the preinstalled crap and download the app AutoKiller. That's my setup and it's worked completely fine for me.

And the battery problem is actually a bug with the phone's radio. If you check cell standby under battery usage it might say "Time without a signal ##%." If the number is in the double digits then that is what is wrecking your battery. You have to turn airplane mode on for 15 seconds every time you boot your phone and that should fix that problem. It's annoying, but if you just can't stand it then install a rom that fixes it.

Though now I'm getting off topic.

If the Black does come put in just a month or so, it will probably be meant to cleanup after the Triumph and get the users who weren't too fond of the device. It will probably end up being the more attractive sibling while the Triumph will be the plain and blocky powerhouse.

But since the Black has more expensive hardware (better FFA, glass touch screen, NOVA display(?), noncheap capacitive sensors that work properly, multicolored backlights for the capacitive buttons (they turn blue when you press them)) I could see it coming in at a slightly more expensive price than the Triumph. Or the Triumph will experience a slight price drop when it comes out. Unless we get a cheapened down version of the phone, in which case I'm sure that would take a lot of the flare out of it.

Never knew about the radio problem! and yea it does say "time without a signal"... damn. and ya i'm running a different launcher, handcent, i rooted the phone... i had autokiller but it didn't seem to help much so i uninstalled it.. i'm the only one in my family complaining, my sister and dad also got the optimus v and they like it. OH and i got my girlfriend to get it haha.. going from 100+ with verizon to $25 with virgin mobile..

thanks for your tips though, i'll pass em on to my family! :)

Also task killers are just a waste they actually cause more drain on the battery then not having anything at all. What happens is they kill the app and most if not all of them restart on their own and then the app kicks in and starts the whole mess over again. It really inefficient current stock ROM already do a good job of memory management. Its the bloatware that cause most of the problems and depends on what apps you have running. For example I have twitter caster on my phone and it was set to check every 5 min for new tweets well it killed the hell out of my battery so I changed it to check every hour and my battery problems when away.

Handcent? Were you refering to that as a launcher? I didn't know they made one. But if it is your hone screen that lags (and I'm assuming it is since that's where people always complain about lag) then try Launcher Pro or Go Launcher. Those are easily the 2 smoothest launchers in the Market and they're both free (though Pro has a paid version too).

And as for Auto Killer, did you tweak the settings at all? I believe the default memory limits are the ones Android already uses, so that might explain that. I set it to start killing empty apps at 175 RAM, and then everything else at 150. It's a bit extreme but it works for me.

Auto Killer isn't exactly a task killer. It's much different and a lot more useful and is less harmful. What it does is change the Android system's app management according to your preferences. So if I hated empty apps and wanted Android to terminate them instantly I could set it to close empty apps once the RAM is down to 10000000 MB or lower. That's a very VERY bad idea but it would work. This lets you choose how much RAM you generally want to have. You could set everything to 150 MB and it would start killing apps depending on their state if you get that low. The Android app management is definitely good for stronger phones, but it's a bit too low for our phones and they will end up lagging after a while.

Sorry, but I disagree.
A custom rom, yes, a task killer is useless and a bad idea.
On a stock rom, if used right, can be a battery saver.
