New Virgin phone, Motorola Triumph | JULY19 | $300

I'm thinking $250 like the Intercept. VM wouldn't dare put their prices up to $300 or higher. If the price was that high they wouldn't sell enough.

I don't think it'll be 350+. thats too expensive for just a prepaid phone. virgins customer base are mostly people that want to save money on their phone bills. Only tech savvy people would pay that much

The plan is still cheap. The phone however probably not.
I dont understand how people can say things like you did?
If the phone appeals to people it will be bought period.
Initial release will either be higher then people are expecting or lower.
I am going to caution to the higher side just so they can get a feel on the reaction.

Just like the Optimus was 199 initially then dropped down then went back up.

I personally dont see the phone going below 199 tho.
It will drop once a replacement phone is released.

What about text savvy people that want to save money? (and who can quickly and easily figure out the overall cost savings, even with a $350 phone).

I wouldn't mind paying extra for a high end phone. The plan is unbeatable by any other carrier. So it makes up for buying an out of contract phone.

Lol - this is totally me - I am planning on jumping to this phone from my fascinate and my wife's Droid x on vzw as we can save literally 100 bucks a month. Even if the phones are a little pricey up front I will make that back in just a few months.

I do hope it splashes at around 200 but if not I will still consider buying in

Looks like Virgin lowered the price of the Optimus V back down to $150. I'm optimistic that this will come in around $250.

too many people root and brick and try to replace their phones. virgin mobile is finally seeing it and saying something about it...

in the past week i think we had a dozen posts of people who bricked becuase they didnt know what they were doing.

I'm glad virgin wants to keep their android experience similar accross the different android phones they offer.

but their going to have to release their OS with either A. no bloat, a pure stock rom, or B. a removable bloatware, and some kind of documentation on how to remove it. without the user having to search for that info.

the bloatware was THE biggest reason I rooted in the first place. if they released a pure android OS, the only people who would root are the people are absolutely cannot have a stock phone. which is a much smaller population than the number of users who are unhappy with bloatware

Bloatware will always be on phones its how companies endorse new services. Every phone i've had for the past 10 years has had some type of Bloatware.

For $300-350, just get a laptop or tablet. That's my reasoning for not upgrading. The OV does everything I want out of a phone. Even the most modest laptops out do our phones in terms of processing power and all of the items you listed.

If I was still stuck with the Where app, I would have dropped VM all together.

I agree with the laptop being more powerful, but the mobility factor is what i am looking for,and the specs of this phone will easily put the V to shame.

Polls have shown the sweet spot for cell phones is $200, Virgin knows it. Even Apple knows it, this is why all phones are subsidized down to that level or more for contract phones.

Virgin can get a bit more and did so with the Blackberry, but it was the first and only smartphone they offered. With them already having 2 android phones, trying to sell a $300 phone, much less a $350 one would be a hard sell unless it was a high end phone. Prepaid or not, not many will pay $350 for a mid level phone. My guess is that it will probably peak at about $250 or so, maybe $300, but I doubt it. Over $300 and I would predict it to be dead on arrival.

That depends.
A rooted and overclocked OV runs about the same as a stock OV running at 1gig (the bloat is equal to 150-200mhz, no kidding). The Triumph is a 1gig phone and you can bet it will have a bunch of junk on it, just like the stock OV does.

So yes, in stock form it rips all over the stock OV, but what if they can't root it? At that point, my nice OV is about on par with it. The only serious advantage will be if this thing can handle flash, which would be nice to have at times, but really, you don't need it.

IF they price this around $200 and someone unlocks it (or it comes with no bloat, fat chance!), I'll consider it. Otherwise, I will stick with my OV. It's rooted, paid for and does what I want.

Lets not forget HDMI mirroring...thats adds up the selling point for me on this phone, i share a lot of family pictures and videos with everyone, it would be nice to show it on a big TV...if this phone sells well, it would be interesting if HTC decides to release a comparable phone to the Triumph.

All the OV needs is official CM support. This phone is also great because its small and lightweight.

Who knows, we might even get CM8 2.4 ICS too! Chances are that won't be happening on the Triumph with a locked bootloader. No custom kernel support and no CM. VM has used that statement to confirm that the Triumph bootloader will remain locked down for sure.

Either way I'll decide based on the custom development if there's any ROMs for the Triumph.

My Optimus V runs clunky at best, with CM7/aosp 2.3.4 @~780mhz, but perhaps it's the RSS and calendar apps I'm running. Snapdragon undoubtedly runs faster, bloatware included.

I do lots of reading on the move, so I'm looking forward to upgrading to the 4.1" upon release. The Optimus V resale value is quite high (although may drop a bit by August), but that would make a $200, or even $300, purchase much more justifiable.
