New VOIP option for GV - single app solution: GrooVe IP

I did a little more testing by calling my wife's phone over 3G. I get very choppy and stuttering voice on her end. She cannot make heads or tails what I am saying. There was also a huge delay about 7 seconds. I can hear her well but there is the same delay. Also, from time to time, Groove IP will drop the call because I am signed out of the app. I usually have to turn the phone off and then on again to get signed back into the app. Not sure what is happening here?

Try doing a speed test from the same location you made the call. See what your upload speeds are. That might be the problem. In great 3G areas, I've made lots of clear calls using this app.

My upload speeds using speedtest.net mobile ranges from 0.05 Mbps tp 0.28Mbps in a series of 5 tests to the closest server.

That is on the slow side, especially the lower limit you are hitting. You need roughly 10kB/s for a reliable call (both directions). That is 0.078 Mbps minimum. Consider that your phone might have other data connections going at the same time. For comparison, I get 0.5 Mbps to 1Mbps upload.

I will continue to check the upload speeds and test the Groove IP app. I think where I live the 3G signal is OK but not great. I will also make sure that there no apps in the background interfering with data transfer. What do you use, besides the native app to check and kill apps in the background?

I made a call over 3G last night while at work... about as strong a connection as you could get. The voices were a little tinny, but otherwise it was a fantastic experience.

I had a great idea for your app that you can add to your list of future stuff to do. Give the option to dim the screen using the proximity sensor instead of turning the screen off during a call and possibly stopping any touch screen inputs as well. Maybe even make that the default option. No more complaints about connectivity issues because of the screen. I know there is an option to leave the screen on during a call, but I see no reason why it can't dim the screen instead.

In my Google Voice account, I have the settings configured to forward all calls to Google Chat and to my land line. However, when I call my Optimus V using another phone, the Optimus V does not ring and my call gets routed immediately to my Google Voice voicemail. Why is this so? Is there a setting that I have overlooked for receiving calls on my GV number to work?

Sometimes when I am receiving a call and the screen is off, my lock screen comes up and when I unlock it the phone is ringing but there is no way to answer it unless I pull down the notification bar and manually enter the app. However the proximity sensor is already activated, making this difficult at times because the sensor turns the screen off.I'm using aospCMod6/1

Hi,

You need to make sure you're not signed in to google chat/talk anywhere else. Also if you previously used sipdroid & pbxes.org you need to remove your number from pbxes.org otherwise calls will go there. Google Voice only rings one sign-in of google chat/talk. We're working on a fix to increase our priority in that list.

Version 1.1.6

- Missed call notification
- Work around to block spam google chat invite emails
- Increase app priority so incoming calls are more likely to route to the app when signed in elsewhere
- Show contact pictures in the in-call screen
- Change default GrooVe IP Google Chat status to "Automated voice only GrooVe IP sign in"
- Allow users to set GrooVe IP Google Chat status to blank
- Fix an issue that caused phone's bluetooth state to reset when GrooVe IP signed out

Does this mean there is a updated version of the app
In Android Market?

Does it matter which source we get it from?

Thanks!

Still doesn't play nice (i.e. work at all) if Google Authenticator is installed. Never registers.

According to the market, GA has between 50,000 and 250,000 downloads, so I don't think it's merely a niche app.

Again, I'm running a stock Optimus V, unrooted. GrooveIP worked fine prior to installing GA, now it doesn't. When I installed GA, I was required to re-log into the other apps that rely on my gmail and/or gvoice accounts, using new passwords from within gmail. This app didn't require that. Therefore, I'm guessing that it's still trying to login with my old credentials and that's why it's not registering.

Before you respond to this post, please ensure you've at least tested GA, otherwise you won't really understand what I'm talking about.

Here's additional info about GA:

Alternatively, just google "hack gmail password".

Works perfectly fine with GA for me. Did you create an application specific password for it in your google account?

It's been uploaded to both the android market and the amazon app store. The amazon app store takes a few days to authorize updates. So hopefully it will be available there by the end of the week.

I actually hadn't heard of google's 2 step authentication. We had another customer email us with issues and this is how they told us they resolved the problem. Hopefully it works for you also.

I use two factor authentication on my google account. ( Google launches two-factor authentication )

So I needed two generate and enter an "application specific password"

Signing in using application-specific passwords - Accounts Help

https://www.google.com/accounts/IssuedAuthSubTokens

Once I remembered to do that, GrooVe IP registered immediately.

You can always update the username and password that GrooVe IP uses by clicking menu then settings to get back to the settings page.

I did originally and entered the 16 character password supplied by Google, but it didn't work. I just tried it again and it did. I must have incorrectly keyed in the password previously.

Thanks for your help.

Just an FYI, google's two step verification has HUGE security flaw. While it requires you to go through the two step security system to access your account, it has you create passwords for applications which they can use to directly access your account without the two step system. This means that if your phone or desktop is compromised (which this phone seems to be by default) and something steals one of your application specific passwords, that password can be used without the two step verification system to access your entire account. You will also have no idea which password was compromised and you will be forced to reset all of your passwords if you ever figure out that you've been hacked. But this won't fix your problem because your new application specific password will just be stolen again, and you'll have no idea which one of your apps is leaking it. You would think that application specific passwords would be locked to a single app, but they are not. You can use the same password for as many apps as you want. Even though they cannot be used in the web interface, they can be used with applications which have the authority to create login tokens.

As an example of how easily this can be used to access your account:
  1. Malicious game from the Market steals one of the many application specific passwords stored in plain text from your phone.
  2. Malicious person uses the password with trillian to log into your Gchat account.
  3. Using trillian's "View Inbox" feature, he is given a temporary token that gives him access to not only your Gmail account but access to all of your accounts.
  4. Meanwhile you sit there fiddling with a two step system just to check your email.

All google is doing is created even more passwords with unlimited access to your google accounts. While you might not have to change your main password if you are hacked, you are actually opening yourself up to a less secure system. My opinion, forget the two step system and create separate google accounts for gmail, google checkout, gtalk, gchat...etc. That is the only way to keep a compromised password from taking down your entire life.

Also, I did use the application specific passwords with groove ip for a while, it worked fine. You need to manually type it in yourself because groove ip has no idea that your password has changed.
