In early 2013, around Feb, I am considering getting a new phone as well as one for my GF, we both have blackberries right now, I have the Torch and do not like it and she has an old curve but it is slowly dying.

I am considering buying Blackberry again if their new OS, OS 10 is solid, but if not, I am tired of the waiting and the promises. I am on ATT and love it and she is on Wind Mobile.
She lives in Canada though, so, we would like to text for cheap. We use BBM for all of that and I leave her voice note messages. Neither of us really use much data, I use maybe half a gig a month and she uses a third of a gig, I guess without the compression of a blackberry I use 2 and she uses just over one.

So my question is, say BB phones are no longer worth upgrading to by then and I want a new phone. What android phones should we get, she must have buttons and is not a fan of touch screen phones, and I wouldn't mind an S3 (maybe the S3+ will be out then) but I dislike when phones become phased out rapidly, ala the S2.

So let me know what you guys think, and let me know if I should wait until March or so if another phone will release then.

by feb?? the latest and greatest Nexus would be released. S3 can never go outdate in another 2 years. i agree it was different 2 years ago but now all flagship phones are top notch and will take at least 1-2 year to become outdated.

s3 is great which will live for a year or so. i dont think s4 can be any impressive. it will just improve the ghz and camera that's it which gives S3 1 more year to outdate..

All the hype in the android community is towards the next nexus. If it lives up to expectations, that will be the phone to get. As for your GF, there aren't many android phones with keyboards, she should at least try out a touch screen phone because most of the android phones have large enough screens that typing is easy. Most people who switch from a phone with a keyboard end up never going back to a physical keyboard.

I could give you all the phone advice in the world, but what needs to happen there is wait and compare what is out at the time of upgrade. Planning ahead is good, but the Holidays are going to bring on more or less 5 new phones.

As far as sending messages goes,, use Gtalk, and it will be free.

She doesn't want a touch screen phone. Are you serious that there is no keyboard phone you can even recommend? I guess that is why BB will always be around, because there will always be a niche for it.

And for the guy who said the S3 will be out for another year or two, you do know that you are off of your rocker right? I wasn't born yesterday, I just wanted another perspective. The S2 came out what....October of 2011? And now, does anyone care about it? I could buy one for 10 bucks new on ATT but no one cares because Samsung stops updating their phones. The same thing will happen to the S3. Technology seems to update yearly, so by March 2013, that would have been a solid 9 months after the release after the S3, so I expect the S3 plus to release sometime this year as someone said, and then maybe a new next best thing to beat out the iphone 5S

For anyone who says the Nexus, what of it, what is this future Nexus suppose to offer to make it better than the HTC One X + or the S3

The poster didn't say that the Galaxy S3 would be on sale for the next two years, only that the hardware is sufficient to keepit in the mix for at least one more year. After Samsung upgrades the OS to jelly bean, then it will more than likely get key lime pie, too. After that, the Galaxy S5 will be ready for all those who live out their two year contracts to upgrade.

Ths S2 is now somewhat irrelevantbecause they came out with the skyrocket for the LTE chipset and the S3 has the quad core and 2gb of ram. It was an elementary decision to upgrade and leave the S2 behind.

As for phones with keyboards, they just don't sell well anymore. A company is not going to make a device that they know they will only sell a handful of devices (not literally a handful). They can make a device full screen touch user interface with a soft keyboard for less than a physical keyboard. RIM still makes them for the blackberry line due to the demand from the crackberry followers which are mostly business oriented. I had a curve back in the day and loved the physical keyboard, but I moved on to a larger selection of devices with bigger and better screens and more options hardware-wise. Also, no trackball or tiny touchpad to navigate through icons.

Also, as for the Nexus, it is not the end all for Android devices. It is mostly a developer model that has overflowed into the consumer market due to demand for a unlocked device running the most recent OS and updated by Google themselves. Sometimes, these devices do not top the newest and best on the market at the time, as we have seen previously. As a matter of fact, the new nexus from LG looks to lag behind the S3 in most hardware aspects right now. Only time will tell, as nothing official has been announced yet.

So, as mentioned in an earlier post, wait until February, or even March, as many new devices will be released before then, maybe even some that rival the S3 and the One X+++++ or whatever their next iteration will be called next month.

The S3 won't be "phased out" quickly with its specs. Samsung might sell another phone quickly, but with 2GB RAM and a fast processor, that phone will be fine (with Cyanogenmod or other custom ROM) for a long time.

How high end does she need the phone to be. Coming from blackberry, I imagine that there are quite a few good midrage sliders. My wife has the Stratosphere and loves it, the Droid line has a good set of sliders. The only one i saw on rogers is the Glide which is a bit dated.

She doesn't want a slider. Just a small simple phone with a keyboard, candy bar style. No extra bulk and a great battery. She hated that her curve lasted only a few days, coming from her dumb phone. Then, she realized a lot of smartphones don't even last a day and liked it more.

I don't think the S3 will be phased out, its just that there will probably be 3 new phones in Feb since the S3's inception. The HTC One X+ is one, I am sure the Galaxy Note 2 is number 2, and then there might be another tweak, upgrade to another line prior to Xmas. Wouldn't you think? Like if you had to buy a phone in Feb/March, wouldn't you want the one that JUST came out!
