Newbie needs a quick answer-please help

Just checked my Sprint Hero and noticed it has the firmware 1.5. Is there any way for me to do a manual update to 1.6 on my own. Also if its possible can it be done with a mac or must i use a windows pc. I have noticed that when i plug the hero into the usb port in my mac, the mac doesnt recognize it, is this because its only compatible with a pc. Also I am a beginner with the android platform and want to know if i attempt to root my hero is there a good chance Ill screw it up or should i just wait for sprint to update the OS.

There is no official 1.6 for the Hero.

When you plug the phone in do you get a notification about USB connected in your top bar?

yes it displays on the phone but nothing pops up on my desktop like other devices do.

You need to go back into the notification area and then click on "Mount the SD card". It is actually a 2-step process...

True, HTC has said they are working on an update of their Sense UI that runs on top of Android and Sprint has also announced that an upgrade to Android 2.1 with Sense UI for the HTC Hero will be available in 1H'10... although we're all hoping for Q1!
