Hello,

I just got a Nexus 4 and have AT&T. I currently have an old bundle plan (Code PMX9) that combines:

unlimited data (3G)
tethering
1500 text messages

When I tried to upgrade to the Unlimited 4G data plan, I was told that there isn't an unlimited 4G data plan that includes tethering. I was told that if I change to the unlimited 4G data plan, I would lose the ability to tether, and there is no way to add tethering to the grandfathered unlimited 4G data plan.

For those of you who have moved over to the 4G data plan and are grandfathered under the unlimited data plan, are you able to tether without running special software?

TIA!

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to teather... I'm not supposed to teather on my galaxy nexus with Verizon but I do so anyways. Doesn't hurt to try I always say! =)

They don't care if you occasionally tether, but if you do it regularly or use a lot of data you'll be redirected to an at+t warning page.

And they can easily tell you're tethered, they just have to bother checking.

So how can they tell if your tethering?

Don't know how ATT does it but supposedly T-mobile randomly checks user agent strings (tells them the browser or program the data is coming from).

I've come to the conclusion that it depends on how much you tether and the type of traffic you create on their network.

I was a moderate user (2-3 gigs a month) with an unlimited plan on att and they caught me. I think they view this as a matter principle --read, money-- with respect to it being against their TOS. Hence when they come across it they address it. Whether you're using 3 gigs or 30 every month.

I tether on occasion but just to check emails/surf the Web on my laptop. (probably 10-20Mbs every few months).

I have not be caught yet, but like others if it is occasional and of a minimal amount, it sees at&t is less concerned.

I tried tethering an iPhone to my Nexus 4, ran the speed test app and during the test I watched the traffic initially start and drop to zero. As if at&t saw the tethering and cut it off.

That's strange. T-mobile told me to tether to save me money.
