Nexus 4: Can screen be kept on during calls?

When you put the phone up to your ear the screen blanks and I assume this is so you don't accidentally use your ear or face to press something then when you take it away you get the screen back on. Anyone know how this works?

I have found that after using the phone for extended time on a call the screen blanks and I need to press the right side button to get it on again. Is there any setting for just the phone that lets the screen stay on and not sleep?

Re: Curious how this works and a question

There's a proximity sensor right by the earpiece that can tell if the phone is up against something (usually your ear), and therefore will signal the screen to turn off while you're on a call. If you're on the call for an extended period of time, it's possible that the screen is timing out according to the length that you specified under Settings>Display, although I admit I've never tested this out myself.

If you have a screen protector or a case on, keep in mind that sometimes these items can interfere with the proximity sensor (especially if the screen protector is dirty or the case has a big lip that is near the proximity sensor). You could try making calls without the case or screen protector to see what happens.

And if you put your hand over it the screens also goes blank.

Putting the call on speaker phone disables the proximity sensor, so the screen doesn't turn off.

Never thought to try my hand to see if that turned off the screen.I have it in a case and still have the original plastic screen protector on and the sensor works fine.

I use the speaker phone a lot and screen turns off after a period of time, probably as set under Settings>Display I have set for 2 minutes. To bad under phone settings that they don't have an override of the main N4 settings
