Nexus 5 and Short Code

Hi I have a nexus 5 and tried today to send a short code text through hangout to get a store discount. I typed it in ,allowed it the settings. And .....Nothing happened, tired a cupple of times and it dosent work. Anyone know how to fix this or am I doing something wrong.

I wasted two days trying to learn Hangout and just replaced it with 8SMS . Other people like Textra better than 8SMS. Everytime I tired to send a SMS with Hangout it became a email. There are a lot of people using Hangout but the UI is very strange when all you want to do is text someone. I still can't use Hangout. I would say download 8SMS or Textra from the Play Store then go to setting>More>default SMS and change it to either Messaging (8SMS) or Textra.

I wanted a SMS/MMS text App not a iMessanger, Facetime, Facebook with SMS and MMS App like I think Hangout is trying to become the total communication App.

If you're using a prepaid carrier service they may not support short codes.

For what it's worth, I stay signed out of Hangouts so any time I go to send something it defaults to regular SMS.

Short codes (also known as short numbers) are special telephone numbers, significantly shorter than full telephone numbers, that can be used to address SMS and MMS messages from certain service providers' mobile phones or fixed phones. There are two types of short codes: dialing and messaging. The equivalent for voice calls is known as abbreviated dialing.

Short codes are designed to be easier to read and remember than normal telephone numbers. Like telephone numbers, short codes are unique to each operator at the technological level. Even so, providers generally have agreements to avoid overlaps. In some countries, such as the United States, some classes of numbers are inter-operator (U.S. inter-operator numbers are called common short codes).[1]

Short codes are widely used for value-added services such as television program voting, ordering ringtones, charity donations and mobile services. Messages sent to a short code can be billed at a higher rate than a standard SMS and may even subscribe a customer to a recurring monthly service that will be added to the customer's mobile phone bill until the user texts, for example, the word "STOP" to terminate the service.

Ok now that I know what Short Code is I did get a SMS from a Credit Card company that wanted me to text back to activate a promotion and I don't think that worked with Metro PCS and 8SMS.
