Nexus 5 and sunglasses incompatibility

My Nexus 5 and my sunglasses are incompatible

I have a pair of polarized sunglasses (Maui Jim) and when I wear them in the car, the screen is completely black -- BUT only in landscape mode....in portrait mode, it's fine.

Perhaps this is how California is dealing with the distracted driving issue!

I'm guessing using non-polarized sunglasses would solve the problem, but wanted to let folks know about this.
