Nexus 5 Camera - Improved with 4.4.2

Re: Nexus 5 Camera - Terrible

I can't express an opinion without being a troll?

Looking at photos I took off my daughter tonight prompted this thread. I'm sure others have similar experiences with this camera.

This is a forum, go look up what that means in a dictionary.

You can express an opinion. But you're wildly exaggerating. It's not even close to awful. Sure, it's not a $800 DSLR but it's decent.

Based on your original post, you seem like someone who has an eye for good pictures and has high expectations for photo quality...which is likely the root of your problem. You have unreasonable expectations. Depending on your phone's camera to grab all of life's precious moments in perfect clarity and tone and whatnot, isn't reasonable and is just asking for disappointment. I understand the need/desire to capture family memories, but if the camera is so important to you, why didn't you stick with the 1020? Or why don't you just carry around a good camera with you?

I think I'm coming off more judgmental and accusational than I intend to be, but it does seem a little puzzling why you'd have such high expectations for an 8 mp camera phone. I was with my brother and my nieces over Thanksgiving and was able to take some great shots of my niece running around in the yard and playing and everything. I don't know if they're perfect, but they're certainly clear enough that they bring a smile to my face every time I see them. They're certainly not fuzzy or blurry.

Re: Nexus 5 Camera - Terrible

The Nexus 5 is an excellent phone in every other way, it's just the camera that I'm disappointed with. I'm not switching back to a Lumia just yet. 4.4.2 seems to go some way to solving the problems I have with the camera so I'll shoot right and hope Google get it right.

Re: Nexus 5 Camera - Terrible

I'm just curious what you consider an "awful" picture. Here are a few of the pics I took of my niece over Thanksgiving. As you can probably tell (and if you have young kids, you know they're always moving) she was moving in all of these. I'd be interested to see some examples of pictures you've taken that you don't like.

Re: Nexus 5 Camera - Terrible

The update has done wonders for the camera. Wait until you get 4.4.2

For sure my Nexus 5 takes very good phots. I can't believe the quality of this compared to my GS3 with the new update. Colors are vibrant and accurate, sharpness is clear not blurred. The time to take the shot is dramatically improved. For an 8MP shooter it does very well. Nexus were never meant to be top of the line flagships for if they were they would kill the need for flagship mfg's and cause hardships for OEM producres. The Nexus line does well what it was intended to do...show what stock Android is capable of. I feel if they put top of the line every thing into the devices the OEM partners will feel snubbbed and leave the system causing its demise. At it's best the Nexus is what OEMs inspire to be with top of the line camera's and stuttering sometimes bloated sodftware to get consumers like you to buy their products.

I feel so far that as an ecosystem the Galaxy line has losts to offer of what main stream consumers want. Geeks want the best performance software wise, and then everything else falls in line. Sure we want a functioning camera OIS does a lot for the N5 but if the camera were 16mp it would probably **** off OEMS or discourage them from moving forward.

I think the new 4.2OTA will help you get the shot that you are looking for....it did work wonders for me!

Well said! Although I think you meant 4.4.2 OTA.

Pretty happy with the update and reiterates by grudge against the nexus 4 camera. It just sucked.

Re: Nexus 5 Camera - Terrible

I'm currently downloading the 4.4.2 update. I'm excited to see the difference it makes!

Re: Nexus 5 Camera - Terrible

The difference is immediately apparent. It's much much quicker to focus and initial shots look a lot better. I look forward to trying it out in daylight tomorrow.

Re: Nexus 5 Camera - Terrible

I rarely use the camera on my phones so I am glad this is where they saved money lol.

But I heard the hardware is very capable, only the software is the issue which can be updated.

Re: Nexus 5 Camera - Terrible

Still on 4.4. My Nexus 7 got the update last night so hopefully soon.

It makes a huge difference. I was shocked that a software update can improve the camera that much.

I agree. I've had a proper play with it now and it's a lot better. It focuses quickly and the images have better tone and more depth. It's actually usable as a camera now.

Re: Nexus 5 Camera - Terrible

Glad it worked out for you OP. I'm quite satisfied with the camera now as well. Actually the whole phone is pretty much a perfect fit for me.
Maybe an edit to the thread title would be good for those who only skim the forum?

Re: Nexus 5 Camera - Terrible

The improvement in the camera with 4.4.2 is just ridiculous. Why didn't they release it like this? I was out at lunchtime today having a play with it. It's still no Lumia 1020 but it was never going to be and the benefits of Android v Windows Phone outweigh the difference between the cameras. Here are a couple of photos I took using HDR+ mode with no editing.

As suggested, I'll change the thread title.

Re: Nexus 5 Camera - Terrible

Why didn't they release it like this?

Because it wasn't ready and they did not want to hold up kit Kat and the Nexus 5.

I think that was a bad call. You just have to look at some of the camera reviews to see that. As they say, mud sticks.

Re: Nexus 5 Camera - Terrible

I think there's a lot of truth there, it's unfortunate that all the reviews have called out the poor camera based on 4.4

Regardless, I still struggled to capture my dog running around in a clear shot. I wasn't really "trying" though I'll see how it goes today

I don't know enough about Google's business model to say if it was a bad call or not. It was a highly anticipated phone and the longer they waited after the new iPhone coming out the worse it might have gotten. I'm happy that they fixed it within a reasonable amount of time. I read an article a while back that said Google intentionally pulled it because it wasn't ready and they wanted to get it right. It also mentioned the app might include .raw support but I guess we'll never know as it still doesn't.

I've had my Nexus 5 for 3 weeks now and it would be a fantastic phone if it wasn't for the excuse of a camera. When I say it's terrible it's an understatement, it's bloody awful.
What is awful about it specifically?

I came to the Nexus via other Androids, iPhones and Nokia Lumia. I think it's the Lumia 1020 that has ruined the Nexus for me.
And it didn't ruin the iPhone for you?

When I compare photos I took on it to the noisy, blurry, under exposed rubbish that the Nexus
LOL! It's the least noisy phone I have seen so far. It has less noise than anything else I have seen except the Lumia 1020.

Maybe you could post some comparison shots for us as examples?
