no files are appearing on my laptop screen when I plug it in via USB. It registers the phone as a nexus but none of the phone files are showing up. I have just updated to 6.0 Marshmallow, could this be the reason? if not help, the other posts are not useful as the setting screens have changed. many info as to how to help or why this is happening would be great.

Hi I didnt know how to say thanks in the comment bit but it workeddd! thank you so much for your help :)

After you plug the phone into the computer, have you swiped down to check the notifications on your phone? You need to choose MTP file transfer.

Hi Yaz,

I think you may need to put your phone in development mode: go to settings/about phone. Tap on the build number about 7 times or until the phone indicates that "you are a developer." Then back out and go to settings. Select Developer options. Scroll down to "select USB configuration and tap it. Toggle between MTP and PTP. MTP mode should allow you to access your files on your phone via your computer. If you were able to see your photo's before android 6.0, you should be able to see them currently--the drivers have not changed.

I have not had to do that - developer mode is turned off. The answer was in the notification screen - the article appeared in AC today and that's where I found it.
