Hey guys, like many of you I an constantly switching devices looking for the next best thing or just testing to see if the new things is better than what I have. Ultimately, whatever device I get, I really just end up doing the same things.... Email, pictures, Facebook, twitter, texting and RSS are the main things. And I typically use the same apps so performance difference its relatively unrealized. So I must say that the nexus 5 is looking to be the android device I cab hold on to until the next model. Sort of like the iPhone. Its fast, lean, highly customizable and a great overall device.

Sure there are some things lacking when it comes to software but those things can easily be provided through the app store and if youre a tinkerer, Roms and kernel. I had the N4 and while it was a great device, no LTE prevented me from going the entire way with it. But with this device I don't feel like I'm missing much from my sgs4, HTC one or G2. And dont get me wrong, its far from perfect but in my experience they all are. This one for me is the best balance between performance and style. I'm looking to make this last until the fall of next year and I think I can stick to that barring a real game changer next spring. Anyone else feel that way?

How do you guys afford switching between all those phones? Even if you sell it when you buy a new one, you clearly can't sell it for what you paid for it, so you end up losing some money, even if that's a very small amount. When you add that up over six or seven devices per year, that's a lot of money you're losing. How many phones do you guys go through on average?

I'm at one a year. I thought I was bad .Everyone acts like I'm nuts because I only go one year on a phone. I pay full price but have never sold my old phone. Thought of selling my Maxx HD but doesn't seem worth the bother. I paid $700 a year ago and now isn't worth half that even though it works perfectly. Seems like I'd be ripping myself off to part with it for so little money.

Except if you don't sell it, it basically becomes worthless. Once I know I'm going to keep a phone I sell whatever phone the new one is replacing ASAP.

I probably do 2 to 4 a year depending. I case and screen protect them. While I do not get the same amount back, it is not bad. I do lose some money but nothing that is a big deal. I do not have a lot of other vices to spend money on so not a big deal for me. I always tease my wife that we spend more on flowers for our yard than I do on phones, so she tolerates it.

I am liking my Nexus 5, but I just got my Moto X and Nexus 5 in the last month, so who knows how long I will keep them.

Re: Nexus 5 is the only android I can keep for a whole year

I agree OP. The nexus 5 I think is going to settle me down a little.

This year I started with iPhone 5, bought a nexus 4, then tried out a lumia 920 for a while, back to iPhone 5, upgrade to iPhone 5s, and now have the nexus 5 on order.

This one better stick!

I agree. That's part of the problem. Unless you but used and sell for close to what you paid you lose a lot of money over time. I typically lower my losses by not always buying for full price at release. Then that's $600+. Usually a month later android devices are down in the $400 range. Another consideration is if you started with a device you bought on contract at a discounted price it may take a couple devices to realize a loss compared to someone that keeps paying full price. But you are completely right. But most just look at it as an expense for their obsession. For some its clothes, others its shoes and some entertainment. For us its gadgets ;).

Actually, it doesn't become worthless. You can use it for a lot of things.

Re: Nexus 5 is the only android I can keep for a whole year

I've bought 3 smart phones outright since last March (and one feature phone). That may seem like a lot but the reason is I was new to smart phones and didn't think I needed/wanted one.

It's a long story but I think I'll probably cool down for awhile. All three are still in regular use. I love my Nexus 5! :D

I guess if you buy used, someone else takes the hit for depreciation. It seems that the N4 kept its value reasonably well, until they were discounted back in ?? August or September.

Yeah the N4 held its value mostly because it was already priced low so the drop is smaller than most because of that.

I feel the same way. Since April I've had an iPhone 5, GS3, Nexus 4, GS4, Note 2, HTC ONE, Moto X and now Nexus 5. I find that the Nexus is the best overall device for me. I don't mind contracts but the carrier locked bootloaders drive me crazy. I'm going to be sticking with the N5 for some time to come.

Same here. My 2013 devices: iPhone 5>S3>N4>iPhone 5>S4>HTC one>iphone 5> S4 > iPhone 5 > g2 > N5. Kinda crazy. This time I'm going to really try to stick with the N5. At least for 6 months lol.

I've had the iPhone 3G (had it for almost 3 years) (sold) - Samsung S3 (sold) - Lumia 520 (keeping as backup) - N5. I'm looking at the G2, and thinking of returning the N5 and getting either a G2 or Optimus Pro G. I like the battery life better on the G2 and G Pro as well as the IR blaster. I don't think the faster processor of the N5 vs the G Pro would make much of a difference to me as I dont' game on my phones.

The Optimus Pro G actually doesn't look too bad. Nearly the same specs as the new Nexus 7 tablet, which is a absolute beast. A bit too big for a phone though, for my liking.

It will keep me calm till the nest Nexus phone come out

Re: Nexus 5 is the only android I can keep for a whole year

I'm one of the crazy people who only upgrades every two years. Sure, I'm curious as to what other phones are like, but not that much. Technology is constantly moving forward and very quickly, which means there's always something better coming along, so I learn to like what I have. Plus, there are plenty of other things I like to spend my money on.

Re: Nexus 5 is the only android I can keep for a whole year

I too am hoping to hang on to the Nexus 5 for a while. When I got the G2 I thought the same thing, but eventually will be letting it go once my N5 arrives.

I'm inconsistent so far. I used the same phone- a Motorola v195s- for about five years, though I bought a Pearl Flip in the midst of that and hated it so much I promptly went back to the Motorola.

From there, I bought a Samsung Vibrant (the T-Mobile Galaxy S variant), which I used for a couple months before it broke and I got it replaced by the carrier. I sold the replacement Vibrant and put the proceeds toward a Nexus S, which I used for two years until I replaced it with the Nexus 4, which I'm still using.

I'm weighing switching up for a Nexus 5, but I'm leaning toward sticking with the N4 for now.
