Nexus 5 owners with T-Mobile $30 Prepaid Plan Thread

So happy to see SMS messages sent to my Google Voice number show up in Hangouts, complete with alerts.

I didn't bother with porting my number so asked T-Mo to close the voicemail since I'm not using that number. Now I receive both voice calls and texts directly on the N5. I think I have a good system for calling out too - made a Mobile Bookmark of the GV dialpad webpage, and sent a shortcut to the main Home Screen. So just one tap takes me there.

Anyone find a way that works better for you?

For those who have rooted their Nexus 5 and followed the directions to unlock the tethering option linked earlier, is the data used while tethering supposed to be deducted from the 5gb pool?

Whoa...how did you link your GV number to Hangouts?

I was really surprised by the texts and alerts showing up in Hangouts. Had just set up the new forwarding phone as "Mobile" in GV settings, and was testing SMS sending/receiving on the N5. It just kept happening.

But, making GV calls thru a browser is still a bad idea. Forgot how bad it sounds on the receiving end. Back to calling GV#, option 2, and the wanted number.

I just got a new Nexus 5 & a new Tmobile prepaid sim (never used tmobile before). I activated the card online and popped it into the phone. Activation went fine. I was assigned number and can make calls.

The problem is with data. Their online map says that I have excellent LTE coverage. But I am seeing terrible speeds...I mean not even 3g. Speedtest never got over 0.5 mbps. I tried this from a few places around town and same result. Called customer service and he looked over my settings and said they looked fine. Tried to blame it on the phone (may not be compatible with Tmobile)

Anyone else seen this problem? Planning to go to a Tmobile store later today but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Where are you located? I have varying levels of LTE, but I have it almost everywhere.

I just use the regular phone dialer to make calls with Google Voice. There's a setting in the GV app that should let you choose how outgoing calls are handled.

Zip code 97070
4G LTE Coverage - Excellent to Very Strong
I tried in a few places around town to account for dead spaces
I feel with speeds below 0.5 mbps, the problem might be more basic than coverage.

Are your APN settings set to fast.t-mobile.com or epc.t-mobile.com? If not the first one, then that may be the problem.

Doesn't the Google Voice App require Conditional Call Forwarding"?

CFC is not available on my T-Mobile $30/100min/UnlimText/5GB pre-paid. I closed carrier voicemail to receive them in GV. Until I update GV alerts settings, N5 is receiving 2 voicemail notifications - Hangouts SMS with transcript, and the Gmail transcript with mp3 download option. Going to drop one or the other.

I wish I would have known about this plan before I activated mine.... I am on Sprint.. I wonder what would happen if I paid the $40 for the SIM and one months service and popped the Sprint SIM out and put the T-Mobile SIM in what would happen? Would I pick up T-Mobile service??? for $40 I'd like to test out the T-Mobile network around the DFW area and see if it's any better than my Sprint service.... If it is I might cancel my Sprint service a couple of months early for $100 and save $45 a month.. I looked at my last 4 bills and I use about 3 gig of data but average roughly 80 minutes a month (If you combine my mobile to mobile/anytime/night and weekend minutes) but I'd hate to pay $100 to cancel to find out service is worse..... Maybe just get a dirt cheap POS Sprint phone off Craigslist and put it on my Sprint account in place of my Nexus 5 and test the N5 on T-Mobile for a month before making that decision..... Hmmmm anyone know what would happen if I just slapped the T-Mobile SIM into my Nexus while it's still on Sprint????

I'm on the same plan. As far as I know, CCF is only used for getting voicemails sent to Google Voice instead of T-Mobile (or something like that). It doesn't affect the way your phone dials numbers. You should be able to use the stock dialer to make calls via Google Voice as long as you have that option set. You can even set it to ask you which service to use every time you place a call.

Yes, it should just pick up the T-Mobile network when you put the SIM in. They're having a sale on them currently (FREE!) so if you need a SIM, you might as well order one now.

Just wondering what are you guys using for more minutes? Planning on dropping go phone at&t for this 30 bucks plan. BUT 100 mins is not going to be enough for me.

Additional minutes are $0.10 each. Just make sure you have some extra cash loaded onto your prepaid account.

If you spend much time around wifi I would suggest using the Vonage app. Yes, only outbound calls are free, but if you make the majority of your calls using this then the 100 minutes allotted could be for receiving incoming.

I tried out tmobile with the n5 and I got decent coverage. At my home I was getting hspa speeds with the occasional LTE, but more often than not, if I would only get consistent LTE near major highways. But the hspa speeds aren't that bad and I always had signal on my phone. Let me know what you think, you can just pop a tmobile sim in your phone and it will work.
