Nexus 5 owners with T-Mobile $30 Prepaid Plan Thread

Although, I still had about a week left on the Straight Talk Service, I could no longer bear the MMS problem which is well known. I am now on T-mobile's $30 plan from Walmart and am having ZERO issues involving any functionality on my Nexus 5. I wish I had chosen this path in the first place. :p

UPDATE: Reception problems inside buildings forced me to get back on Straight Talk with new sim card which resolved reception as well as MMS issue.

My problem is that I did switch to the T-Mobile $30 plan, but when at work I get no service. It will roam to AT&T for voice, but I need data! Looks like I'll have to go AT&T route and now pay double. :(

That's thirty additional dollars - so a minimum of $80.

Does that mean they are increasing the price of their existing Unlimited plan? "Sign up today and double your 4G LTE tethering (Smartphone Mobile HotSpot). Beginning March 23, 2.5GB becomes 5GB, for the same price." From what the article said and the wording of the quote taken from their site it sounds like that may be the case.

The 5GB would be $70 and the unlimited LTE would be $80.

Well that sucks. 10$ a month is a whole lot more money just to double the amount of tethering I can do. I was considering dropping out of my family's AT&T account for unlimited data but another 10$ makes it that much less tempting.

Hey man I noticed that my walmarts in Kansas did the same thing. I order the $30 sim activation kit online from walmart.com. Then I activated it through t-mobile.com prepaid activation website. Took a week to ship the SIM kit and 5 minutes to active. Good luck!

To all the people on here using LTE and phone apps to make free calls on this plan, how is the call quality? I had this plan on an hspa phone and call quality was horrible 99% of the time. I'm wondering if the LTE fixes this limitation.

I'm guessing that you're referring to using apps like GrooveIP to make free calls. I've used it on the Tmo $30 plan with both my N4 (hspa) and my N5 (lte) and the truth is, from a reliability perspective, wifi calling sucks in general. Sometimes it's perfect, sometimes terrible, and sometimes it's in between. Because you can't count on it most of the time, it's not reliable. That may change with whatever Google is rumored to be doing with wifi calling via Hangouts. The technology is there...a Skype call from laptop to laptop can go on for hours with all the clarity of a land line call. I have no idea why they can't make that work for a cell phone wifi call???

Having said that, I still love this $30 plan. If you blow through your 100 minutes, it's only 10 cents per minute thereafter, so every additional 100 minutes cost you $10. You can talk for 300 minutes (200 over at $10 per 100 = $20 added to your bill) and only spend $50 per month with 5 gb of 4G data. Many of the other plans that charge $60 or $70 have a 2 gb (or less) 4G data limit. It all comes down to figuring out what your actual usage is. How many minutes do you talk and how much data do you use? Most all plans have unlimited texting, but most people don't actually need unlimited calls, and for many of us, 4G data is king.

I saw this on my tmobile account app Instead of 5GB it now says unliScreenshot_2014-04-03-08-17-36.jpgScreenshot_2014-04-03-08-17-36.jpgmited data, and 100 mins of talking. Is this correct or incorrect?

Unlimited data, that is throttled to 2G after you use 5GB (which is 4G).

Edit: I'm probably wrong. You may have been bumped to Unlimited 4G for the same price as the previous 5GB of 4G cost.

It's always been unlimited data. The 5GB is just the 4G limit. Nothing has changed and nothing is incorrect. Check under your Plans and Services and you will you see.

I've been using the $30/mo t-mobile prepaid plan successfully for years now. The one downside is the lack of automation. I would prefer not to have to add funds to my account every month. I also tend to go over my minutes some months which requires me to add more funds and keep track of how much I'm using. I use callingmart to refill. Does anyone know of a way to automate this entire process? Thanks!

If anyone sees a promo code for a free or discounted SIM card for this plan, would you post it. I've got my phone already. My ATT contract ends at the end of the month.

Got it today! Thanks.....FREESIM worked today for .01

You just missed a deal for the T-Mobile Prepaid SIM Activation Kit for a penny. Expired yesterday. :(
