Now that the ONE and S4 have been outed and we see what technologies are in 2013 flagship phones, what do you think we can expect from the N5?

I'd honestly love to pay a little more for the N5 to have a more solid build quality with premium casing materials... One can only hope.

Probably a 5inch screen would be expected...though not something I really care about.

I quite like the current design as well, but obviously that will change depending on who makes the phone :)

The internals will obviously change with faster processors and graphics, better screen resolutions etc.

Honestly my main areas of imrpovement for the nexus 5 would be:

Camera: Make it better (even though it is still pretty good, it can be better)
Battery: As above
Speaker: Move it from where it is to either the bottom or the phone or make it dual output
Storage: Make it bigger! (and give us the option to add external storage if needed...or if you wont do that at least make the internal storage bigger)

Other than that, its pretty much perfect for my use as is!

I think I'd like for the next Nexus phone to be similar to the HTC One. Similiar build (aluminum body) but with a superior camera to what all Nexus phones have had up to now. I'd like to see at least 32GB of storage offered as well.

- I'd bet aluminum body, but with some innovation to allow wireless charging.

- Obviously a 1080 screen.

- LTE

- Both hardware & software improvements on the image capturing side

- Larger battery

Predictions are hard without knowing who's making it, but here are a few things I'd feel comfortable at guessing:

  • 4.7-5" 1080 HD screen
  • QualComm Snapdragon 800 2.0+ghz SoC
  • 16/32gb Storage, 2-3gb of RAM
  • 2500 mAh battery
  • 8.0 megapixel camera
Why only 16/32gb of storage? Google is devoted to cloud storage, so I doubt we'll see more than that. I wouldn't even bet on 32gb, I only threw it in there because Google likes to offer devices with varying storage sizes these days. I also don't expect them to bump the camera up very high, although a higher quality sensor is probably likely.

A few I'd like to see:

Self-healing glass screens (such as Pro-Fill SOA)
Capacitive touch sensitive rear panel
Voice assisted Swype-style typing for punctuation/error correction on the fly
Self-charging kinetic and/or thermal battery (to supplement a traditional AC charge)
Expandable memory and larger internal memory

It's a Nexus and it's made by Google - don't step into the future...stride into it.

I'm baffled. So what is it about the build quality of the Nexus 4 that has you so distraught? I guess I'm in the minority but I think its build quality is exceptional. But then I also thought Sammy's build of the Galaxy Nexus was fine when so many were whining and moaning about build quality of Sammy devices. I think some of you need a good dose of objectivity. O_o

Expandable memory and larger internal memory

Google has cast expandable memory to the side due to how they want the file system to operate. You won't ever see a memory card slot on a Nexus phone again. More on-board storage would be nice, though.

As for build quality and casing materials, maybe machined aluminum like the HTC One? I don't see how that's better in quality or materials though, just different.

+1 on having a 32 GB model available. Which I do predict will happen.
A full HD screen would be nice although I have never seen one in person.
Not too concerned with build materials since I always case up.
I like the current size but since they put a 5 inch screen on the S4 in the same size as the S3, I am open to a larger screen but not really larger dimension of the device.

Curved 4.7+ screen, full 1080, 3000 mA battery minimum, 32G storage, mini hdmi or MHL, KLP, LTE. Dual front speakers. +1 for self healing glass. Wireless charging. Quad core, 2G RAM. And please make it able to cook dinner. Thanks. :p

What?! ...I'm msndrstood.

Most likely a 5" 1080p screen, Snapdragon 600 or 800 processor, 2-3 GB RAM, 13+ MP camera with 1080p video at 60 fps, and a battery capacity of at least 2500 mAh.

I would hope next Nexus has
-- LTE
-- Same size screen. Don't want it too large.
-- 32 gigs of storage
-- Better battery life
Those are priorities. In meantime loving my Nexus 4 and most happy with build quality.

Put LTE.. On a HTC one body with the power button on the side and I'm pretty sold....

Er make the back a bit flatter too.. And in a nice black coat without the capactive buttons!!!

Nexus phones are more about the pure Google software than just the hardware. On the hardware side, I want the Nexus 5 to have a 1080p screen, a better processor, all the incremental stuff. But it's the software that I think will rock the show again. Try as the OEMs might, they will never touch Google - either in android or in services. I want Google to make software and services enough of a game so the OEMs stop screwing around with their own inferior products.

I would actually vote against having a larger screen. There comes a point when it's not a phone, it's a tablet, and I think that Google and the Google ecosystem would do well to remember that.

Screens from 4.3" - 4.7" (10.9 - 11.9 cm) are really ideal because they give you enough real estate for a phone, but they're not too big for too many people's hands out there. Once you start talking about 5" (12.7 cm) and up, to my mind that's really starting to get too awkward.

Beyond that, I would only look for a few things:
? Higher-capacity battery so folks could go 2.5 - 3 days between charges;
? LTE (of course);
? 32GB and 64GB (maybe even a 128GB) option;
? Edge- or front-facing stereo speakers

I don't know whether Google's use of the EXTfs rules out them *ever* using microSD again, but I'd not mind if they did go back to microSD for storage. Other than that, if the thing is freaking huge enough in terms of capacity, it might not really matter all that much.

Oh, and I would wish that Google would start using PNG as the default image format, not JPG.
