Nexus 5 + Prepaid Cost Savings over 24 Months

Very easy if you are not currently on a contract. The only thing you will loose is MMS. And before people jump on me and say "who uses MMS anymore?!?! So lame bro!!" there are good reasons for wanting MMS. I cannot control what people send to me. If someone sends me an MMS I will never even know they tried to contact me. That is BAD. Many phones automatically send a group text as an MMS. Which means I am the only one in the group that doesnt get the message. BAD. I have no interest in sending MMS, but I like receiving messages people send me.

If you can put up with not getting MMS, porting your number to google voice is great. So many benefits. If my phone dies I can borrow someone else's and log into my account online and see if I missed any calls or send/receive texts. If I am in a building with no cell signal but with wifi I can send receive texts and be alerted to missed calls. Same when I am traveling internationally. It turns your phone number into a cloud service no longer tied to one specific device. Once you port to GV you can stop being gouged $20/month to send a bunch of 160 byte messages. GV is great and it frustrates me the neglect google has given it. Hopefully that changes with hangouts.

I used GV for about 6 months and love it. However the app was slow and just terrible IMO. I couldnt deal with it afterwards. Other than that I loved it on the PC and tablet! But for my normal phone usage texting is just better. I even reviewed it on my blog. I still use it for VM though and I give out that number to others that are not "personal" friends or family. (Like my bills are are done in GV just because.)

Interesting. Thank you for the heads up on that. The few people I do MMS I guess I could get them to start using Hangouts for messaging. That would suck if say my mom, on her dumb phone, sent me a pic of my daughter doing something cute that day. Maybe the data only plan would have a wait a while then really.

i could never live without normal/regular/standard multi-platform compatible MMS. too many of my friends use it and it's almost as used and as ubiquitous as SMS. how else are you going to get those random shots of that chick your buddy picked up at the bar???

It is highly annoying. Sometimes I have considered dumping gv because I get tired of explaining to my friends why I didnt get the message. I just can't let go of the other features though.

OT, are you the same gekko that used to frequent palminfocenter? :P

Hah. I have grown up since then too :). I was jkinggrim. After the debacle that was garnet/cobalt I finally gave windows mobile a try and came to like it. I then moved on to Android about 3 years ago. And you?

Hey guys,

I went through all the steps to activate my T-Mobile prepaid sim for the $30 plan but when I get to add my funds I keep getting this stupid error and can't continue. I don't see these stupid fields anywhere on the screen and don't know what to do now.

Hmm, try it in a different browser first. I have had weird problems like this with their site before. If that doesn't work, you can try customer support.

I'm also porting my number and the CS rep I talked to said that I can't add funds till my number is ported over is that true?

My GF who has the 30 dollar t-mobile plan with 100 minutes is unable to dial out or receive calls after 100 minutes (unless she has extra funding which she doesn't). However if I dial her google voice number she is able to answer on either her phone or chromebook. She can also jump on her chromebook go to google voice, input a number, and it will dial that number...her phone will ring with her google voice # on the caller ID, she can answer, then the # she input on google voice is dialed out...FOR FREE

Seems to be a glitch

Google voice "glitch" no longer works :(

in other news we found an app that makes calls through data
https://forums.androidcentral.com/e.../details?id=com.moplus.gvphone&token=FnHYFl44

worked well we talked for nearly an hour with gargles only a couple times

Groove ip is another one to try. The free version only works over wifi and the pay version (~$3, well worth it) works over any connection. It has lots of features and settings to help improve sound quality.

Of course, hopefully this week hangouts will eliminate the need for these third party solutions.

That's ridiculously expensive. I can get an Unlimited Data Sim only deal for ?12.90pm, or $21. As the Nexus 5 here will be ?280, 280+12.9*24=?590, or $950 over 2 years. And the Xperia Z1 is ?34pm +?49 for unlimited data again, ?865 or $1400 over 2 years... Americans really get steamrollered when it comes to mobile contracts...

Same here, got my nexus 4 (2 weeks before price drop rrrrr) then got my three one plan twelve months ?15 a month unlimited texts calls and data + LTE, if I can get it to work, when they get it to work

I'm switching to a sprint contract and it will be cheaper vs the no contract virgin mobile that I have currently. $400 32gb nexus 5 + 24 months at $60= $1840 vs $0 32gb LG G2 with 2yr contract at $70/month unlimited everything (Airline discount)= $1680... wish I could keep a no contract plan but upgrading to the latest devices cost wayy too much compared to the free phones you can get on a 2yr contract

don't forget about surcharges, taxes, and fees. i believe that prepaid plans do not have even close to the same level of confiscatory extra charges that postpaid plans do. for example -

Sprint Surcharges.......................................................................... $5.89
Government Taxes & Fees............................................................ $3.68
Total................................................................................................ $9.57

how much are your postpaid surcharges, taxes, and fees?

I included tax and fees in my $70, in my state its a little over $10 in extra charges. If it wasn't so expensive to buy an unlocked phone I would probably stick with a no contract plan. Overall I'll be spending less and have a better phone, and after 12months I'll get a new phone with the cheaper upgrade price
