Nexus 5 WiFi problem

Something else I noticed last night that just popped into my head, I was streaming a film to my PS3 over wifi and then started to download a few apps on the Nexus 5 over wifi. The Ps3 started to have buffering issues like it's bandwidth had dropped, ended the download on the N5 and the PS3 returned to normal. Never had that with any other device I own. It's a strange one alright.

I'm having a different issue. 2.4 works fine, solid connection. 5ghz connects fine, solid connection but try & do anything & I get unable to connect to proxy server. No issues with 2 x laptops, HTC One X or TV which are all connected to the 5 ghz band. I've rebooted the router & also changed channels. Any help appreciated.

Same problem I had one time with a Lumia 920 I think I had to modify some of the routers settings. If you live where their are multiple wifi signals then it could be a problem of your router hopping channels too frequently because of the interference. The test is if you can connect to a public hotspot or another router, then it is your router with the problem settings. If the problem persist with any other router and hot spots then it is the phone.

This is good advice, you can use an app called Wifi analyzer to see what channels are in heavy use around you and set your gear to the one with no one on it.

Indeed that was what the problem was and this was with an Asus RT-AC66U.

Compared to my Nexus 4 I'm noticing that the Nexus 5 WiFi signal is about 5 to 10db worse. Haven't fully tested but the 5 may be better in the 5Ghz band than the Nexus 4 did on the 2.4Ghz band, but that's just a hunch. I'll have to do some further testing to see if this plays out. I wouldn't call the Nexus 5 Wifi horrible, but it does seem somewhat less than the 4. However it's still a lot better than my HTC Sensation was.

My Nexus 4 would just randomly stop working on wi-fi but at least the blue icon turned grey, so I knew it was just temporary and it would return on it's own given a couple of minutes. Since on my new Nexus 5 they are now already that colour, I can't see if its stopped working. It's just done it now and a quick Airplane mode toggle brought it back.

Well I report no problems with my wifi on my Nexus 5 with my Asus RT-AC66U. :) I'm using it on the 5Ghz Band AC.

Just out of interest, the people having issues. R they experiencing them on different networks or just their home network?

I don't think it's a hardware fault, it seems more of a software issue on the device as turning off the wireless works, without having to reboot the device.

Been using my Nexus all day and no wifi issue at work. We have a cheap router and I am getting full signal, and I am about 20 feet from the router. This is a speed test when I was in the lunch room which is about 75 feet away from the router in my office. Our internet is 40 down/ 40up

This might end up being a launch issue, so if it is it's in your best interest to all get on Google's support forum with it so they patch it fast

Could be router issues as well. Newer mobile devices are notorious for not supporting older routers well. I've had to buy newer routers pretty often to combat that problem and it resolved it

Yep big thing is you will be surprised how many router manufacturers half-*** the wifi standards in their devices. Or sometimes you might just need to set a static IP on the phone for it to work best.

Damn I am having issue with my RT-N66U. I was able to connect to the router and then I walk away (10 feet away from my router) and i lost connection. I had to re connect. This is on 5GHz. I havent try connecting to 2.4GHz.

My setup for 5GHz
Wireless Mode N Only
Channel 161
Channel bandwidth : 40 MHz
Extension Channel : Auto
WPA is AES

Sometimes the auto extension channel is the problem see if setting it to one static channel will help. SOmetimes with it on auto and more wireless networks are around you it will hop to much for the phone to keep up.

Try changing the channel to 36 or 34. The Galaxy S4 has similar issues with N channels on Asus routers and it has the exact same broadcom Wi-Fi chip as the Nexus 5.

Edit - Also change your security to WPA2 AES and make sure there are no spaces or underscores in the SSID.
