Nexus 5 with Lollipop impressions

The sound that is played when taking a screenshot is so subtle I thought it was a sound from something else.

I miss the old screenshot sound :(

This is an incredibly smooth OS. I love the lock screen notifications. I really missed that from BB 10. I like the new sound controls and the card stack in the recent apps list. The new keyboard is spaced out much better. I don't hit "b" by accident when I go for the space bar. Did I mention its fast?

Just got lollipop today and so far it's extremely smooth. Material Design looks fantastic, although I would like an option for a dark theme for the settings and search battery/app backgrounds (although the light theme is starting to grow on me :) ). I haven't had it long enough to test battery usage so I will see if there are any improvements tomorrow. Adaptive brightness is cool and I like the new quick settings. I could remove one of my widgets because Lollipop has the flashlight built in now. There have been small smaller stutters here and there but it just got released and I expect Lollipop to get even sweeter with more updates.

lollipop is ok i like new design and ui overall.. But this new notification profile thing is complected. Wouldn't be easier to just add 4th profile called "priority" instead of redesigning the whole thing. And what happened to power off menu? now it's just "turn off" it used to have airplane mode and silent. I don't get how brightness works.

I'm underwhelmed by battery performance it was better before.

Now I am fairly sure my battery performance is a little worse than before, by about 5%. And this is being measured on a completely idle phone before vs. after, over a 9+ hour period and in the same locations.

Judging by today I'd have to say now my battery is comparable to how it was before. It was much worse yesterday though so who knows. :)

So I just received the OTA. I have played around with it and have a couple of questions.

When I had the SG3, Touchwiz had hotbuttons on the lockscreen. They allowed you to choose which apps could placed as hotbuttons on the lockscreen. Does Lollipop allow us to change them? I would rather have texting than the phone.

The old Gallery now appears to be called Photos. When I selected it it said that I had to have Google+ active in order to use this app. Is there a workaround? Is there another 3rd party Gallery app the is recommended?

With the new notification ability, do I still need Notifyme? Lighton for LED notifications?

I forgot why I didn't like the old Calendar but I switched to Business Calendar on Kit Kat. Is the new Calendar app better?

I have been waiting for Lollipop improved the texting feature of Hangouts. It looks the same. I will likely pay the $3 for add free SMS8.
Side load the KitKat gallery app, works just fine. :)

1) I hate the white backgrounds. Why can't we *choose* which background we want on menus??
3) I hate the non-segmented wifi and cell reception indicators

AMEN! I DETEST this white screen crap on a cellular level (npi). It's 2014, and no one cares about seeing What You See Is What You Get when using a printer to put ink on paper. It's not the 90's. I hate it during the day, I REALLY hate it at night, I hate the design ethic (which seems pervasive in the Google world). I HATE Google being in the business of selling hardware, supporting open source OS, and not grasping that on our expensive and beautiful state of the art screens, users would like a simple CHOICE of light or dark theme. And we don't like that choice taken away. And we really hate that you don't get it...

With the flat dull childlike icons, sudden limit of choices (no dark theme), this is a GIANT Hulk-like leap backward from a design perspective. I used to advise people thinking about buying an iPhone to get Android (on Nexus 5), mostly on the strength of having such a pretty interface. Kiss that recommendation goodbye... Now I'm going to spend hours and days trying to customize every ugly screen and icon into something that doesn't make me throw up a little in the back of my throat every time I use it.

Meanwhile, OS X Yosemite is offering a dark theme for the FIRST TIME EVER in their aqua (?) interface. Way to let the competition leap forward while you leap backward, Google. Can't begin to describe how much I hate your glaring ugly screens now...

2) Not sure I like the recently used list
3) I hate the non-segmented wifi and cell reception indicators
4) I think I like the contacts screen better (very much like it being renamed from "people" which was stupid, to "contacts")
5) OMG!!! They FINALLY added the ability to control the brightness while in Auto mode!!![...]
6) I tested bluetooth dialing a few times, and I think it actually works now, which it almost never does. [...]
7) Not sure I like the keyboard yet
8) So far I see no change in tower reception (T-Mobile)
9) Battery life is not any better
10) I hate the change to the battery usage detail, since now it is a total percent of the battery, instead of the percent of what was USED. [...]
11) Replacing the home icon/button with a circle is just stupid.
12) Some things never seem to change. I had 4 apps to update, told it to update all and walked away. Came back after a shower and woke the phone. Sure enough, it is stuck "pretending" to update two of the 4 apps because the stupid OS shut down networking during screen off. Required aborting and restarting. And this is with "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" = always.

Did you really just compare a desktop OS to a mobile one? I'm not sure people are cross shopping OSX versus Android. At all. Ever.

BTW, has Android ever had a "dark theme"? If it was there before I certainly missed it.

13) They now put a black bar across the entire bottom of the screen for the nav buttons.... permanently reducing the size of the display. No more auto hiding of the nav buttons? I noticed this first on my Nexus 10. All my games are smaller now.

Huh? I don't have permanent black bars across the bottom of my Nexus 5. Or Nexus 9. Or Nexus 7. Or Nexus 10. Or SHIELD tablet (which doesn't have Google Now Launcher installed at all). Apps can decide to use the full screen or not. The launcher can also decide this.

Then why on the N10 did I have a transparent bar before on the home screen, and none in most of the games before the update and now I have a black bar after the update on the home screen, and the same black bar on all of the apps I have tried (every game, QuickPic, TiVo App, etc)? Some API has changed and NONE of the apps I have changed yet?

I think I jumped the gun on this one. With more testing it turns out that SOME of the programs that used to hide the bar now don't and some that used to still do. So it probably *is* an API change. I have removed that complaint from my previous posting since although the situation is annoying, it is probably not a valid complaint.

I just tried this but it has been on the wiping cache...formatting cache screen for about 5 minutes. How long does it normally take?

Normally pretty fast but my nexus 5 too several minutes. I almost reset it but it finally but it finally.

Next question, just to be sure, did it change your launcher without telling you?

The new Google calendar looks prettier and is very smooth, but still does not have nearly the functionality of Business Calendar.

Before you spend the money, check out the new Google Messenger. Its very clean and fast & efficient. I prefer it to Hangouts but still use Hangouts for the text & voice message integration.

That's funny. I prefer Hangouts to Google Voice, but haven't switched them over as only Google Voice lets me download voice and text (and record calls from phone) from web browser. But hangouts lets me use wifi to make calls, so that's nice. Will have a look at Messenger.

-You seem behind the times if you don’t think this is a major factor in decisions to buy iPhones, iPads, or Android. See OS X, iOS further merge with Yosemite, but how far is too far? | Digital Trends

-You missed it. Too bad. All this time you could have had good looking screens, and now they’ve taken that option and aesthetic pleasure away from you.

No, I don't think people are skipping Android because OSX is nicer. OSX and iOS are still two very different operating systems that don't target the same market at all (no OSX phones or tablets, and no iOS laptops).

They might skip Android because iOS works better with OSX, but that's not the same thing at all.

that's nerd talk. People absolutely buy a mac over a PC because OSX is nicer, and people are dumb, and often will spend $500 on something because it looks like their other thing.
