I just updated my Nexus 5X phone with the official OTA 7.1.1 OS. I had about 16.8 GB memory used out of the 29.12, but since the OS updated, it's gone up to 20.19 GB! That's a loss of 4 GB...what the hell, Google?

I rebooted the phone, same issue. What's happening and how do I fix it? (please don't say reset the phone...)

Thanks.

Hi. I'm new to this forum. Thanks in avance for your help.

I'm having a similar issue, but my system size is now 4.01 GB after 7.1.1 official OTA (AFAIK it should be less than 1 GB). My N5x is the 16 GB version, so you can imagine how important is to recover those missing 3 GB

I bought the N5x (brand new) last week, but I thought it was a good idea to wait for the official 7.1.1 OTA before upgradind from 6.0. So yesterday I did the whole update process in a single shot... First from 6.0 to 7.0... Then a couple security parches, and then finally the update to 7.1.1 (all official OTAs, no ROOT, all stock). In all intermediate update stages, system size was close to 1 GB. It was just in final 7.1.1 that the system size increased to 4.01 GB.

I've seen this problem in other forums over the last 24 hours, but no solution or explanation yet. Looking forward for your wise advice. THANKS !

I have no idea what the issue is but I ended up factory resetting my phone because that was one huge chunk of memory gone! Really poorly done, Google. Wonder if they'll address this obvious issue...

I decided to take a look and I too had over 21GB used, but looking closer I had almost 5GB of cached app data, which is crazy! Clearing that affects nothing (different from app settings) and it got me down to 16GB.

Hey hollydolly, did the factory reset bring back the missing memory ? While keeping 7.1.1 ?

I lost all my photos, but yes, factory reset kept the update at 7.1.1 and I got back 13GB in memory by resetting everything.

Great ! I will backup my stuff and do the factory restore then. Did you do any further step prior to restore it? , like wipe cache or something? Was the factory restory done through settings, or with recovery mode?

Sorry Hollydolly, last question: Do you remember how big the SYSTEM partition (under STORAGE in settings) was before the factory restore? And how big it is right now?

No, I didn't bother with all that. Just backed up the important stuff and wiped the phone to factory settings and started over.

Hey Hollydolly, sadly the factory restore didn't fix the problem for me. The system partition keeps showing 4.01 GB used (while it should be close to 1 GB). Thanks anyway. Cheers

The size of storage is 29.12 GB now. Before update, it was 24.xx GB. It is just a different way of reporting the storage size. There is no change in the storage space taken.

Have you wiped the cache partition recently? That's something you should do occasionally, and especially after a large system update. Everything in the cache partition takes up space until you wipe it.

I have the 7.1.1 beta and according to settings/storage my system is using 4.01Gb. Can someone who is still running 7.0 check and tell us how much space their system is using.
