Should I choose Nexus 5X or Moto G4 Plus?

Both cost almost as much here. Nexus 5X 16GB costs exactly as much as Moto G4 Plus 16GB (but I'm interested in the Nexus 5X 32GB for just a little more).

Pros, Nexus 5X:
* Better looking (my own opinion)
* NFC
* USB-C
* 5,2-inch screen (prefer a smaller sized phone)
* Better processor? Snapdragon 808
* Secure updates (though Motorola is one of the better)
* Front-facing speakers

Pros, Moto G4 Plus:
* Water resistent (not waterproof)
* Expandable storage (but doesn't seem convincing to store apps on)

If I understand correctly, Moto G4 Plus has no NFC? None of them has OIS (optical image stabilization), only digital?

I have heard that Moto G4 Plus has heating problems because of Snapdragon 617. It should also be suffering from throttling.

Nexus 5X is older but seems better or have I missed something?

The only negative thing with Nexus 5X is that it lacks expandable storage, but I prefer to store images and videos in the cloud. I'm always streaming music.

The important thing is that I can fit many apps. My dad has a Moto G2 and I think it seems tedious to store apps on the memory card (and all apps can't be stored on the memory card either).

It would be interesting if you could link to the reviews that you've read. I haven't heard that Nexus 5X throttles, and I've read/seen much.

I can link to several videos about Moto G4 Plus heating problems.

Sure, we have a colder climate but it shouldn't make much difference if you push the processor through games or camera.

You can always ask what your wife thinks. Let her feel both phones in reality, if possible.

I base my decision on the size and software (plain Android, security and timely updates from Google). I trust Google, but I have no confidence in Lenovo.

You can read about the Nexus 5x throttle here
Final Words - The Google Nexus 5X Review

I'm not saying that there isn't any overheating issues with the Moto G4. I think it depends on how you use it (and to a lesser extend where you live). Som of the users with overheating problems only had problems outside which makes me believe that ambient temperature matters.

Anyways, I think they both suck and I hate that no mfg can make a decent phone:-)

That reads like an overall positive review, to me.

Perhaps you should read the overheating thread on the Lenovomoto thread a bit more closely? People are having overheating and slowdown problems doing average stuff in air conditioned environments.

The Moto line used to be a good bargain. An above-average-quality device for the money. I don't think that's true, any more. I think Lenovomoto is lowering the quality to be typical for the price point. Milking the "Moto" name for all they can, while they can.

I haven't quite given up on the idea of an MXPE, but I'm very >< close. If I do decide to go that way, I expect that'll be the last Moto device I'll ever buy.

Speaking of throttling: When, and if, Lenovomoto ever gets around to admitting the Moto G4 has an overheating problem, and when, and if, they actually address it: How do you suppose they'll "fix" that problem?

Or if you can wait til November, see what is announced then. I'd have bought the Nexus 5X already but it doesn't have the Snapdragon 820.

I have used both. I think Moto G4 is better.

Moto G4 Plus (64GB)

  • You should definitely get 64GB version. Only 50 dollars more and you get not only extra storage (16GB -> 64GB) but also extra internal RAM (2GB -> 4GB). Not all flagship phones have 4GB internal RAM.
  • It's much smoother to run and switch multiple apps with Moto G4 Plus (64GB) because it has 4GB RAM. And maybe because Moto G4 Plus has more cores. (8 cores)
  • Fingerprint sensor is at front. I was used to back side fingerprint sensor, but I found that adding left thumb fingerprint to Moto G4 Plus is very convenient. I put my phone on my left side pocket upside down and I unlock the phone as soon as I take it out from my pocket.
  • Motions are very convenient. Take out your phone and rotate your wrist at the same time to start the camera. When your phone is in front of your eyes, it's already ready to take a shot.
  • It is said that Nexus 5X processor is better. But I couldn't feel the difference. In my opinion, the performance was better on Moto G4 Plus because it has larger RAM.
  • It sometimes gets hot. But the battery life is longer than Nexus 5X, in my opinion.
  • It's close to a vanilla OS with minimum but great improvement. My old 1st gen Moto X had voice action issues because of their enhancement. But 4th gen doesn't seem to have any issues.
  • You don't need a pin to change SIM card. Use your finger nail to open the back lid.
  • It supports micro SIM and it comes with a solid adapter, so nano SIM also works.
  • The size is perfect. I used 6 inch and 5.8 inch phones and they are a little big.

Nexus 5X
  • Front facing stereo speaker is great choice for virtual reality like Google cardboard.
  • It's vanilla Android OS, so get the earliest update. (Doesn't mean much these days in my opinion, because the mobile OS evolution is slower.)
  • It is said that Nexus 5X has better performance. But it was impossible to play most games.
  • It's a good option for ones who prefer smaller phones.
  • It has NFC, so you can use it to pay and... Android Beam. It's cool, but I didn't see many people using it.
  • The screen is IPS LCD. I used to prefer this to AMOLED in the past. Not anymore.
