Nexus 6: Camera Pictures! Lets see them.

You're looking at pictures in a vacuum, without context of performance.

You might find it more educational to observe comparisons where reviewers have taken pictures with various phones (the above included) of the same exact subject material in varied conditions. As to relative performance overall, the folks at DxOMark (a pretty solid authority in the realm of photography) rated the Nexus 6 as one of the best phone cameras they've ever tested, falling behind the iPhone 6 (top ranked) and just slightly behind the Galaxy S5 (which, iirc, is the same camera setup as the Note 4) - but ahead of the iPhone 6.

Of course, quality is subjective, and always in the eye of the beholder. IMHO the Nexus 6 is a very good phone shooter (and light years ahead of the prior Nexus models).

I'm not trying to do a statistical analysis. The iPhones take better pix.

Can anyone recommend an alternative camera app that could improve picture quality?

While I'm almost certain you've already tried this, I wouldn't want to have failed to mention it if you haven't: Have you tried shots both with HDR+ on, and off?

As to apps, if you're comfortable with more advanced camera settings / DSLR controls, try Camera FV-5. It allows capture in .RAW format and a wide array of controls. It's a paid version (~$4), but if you want to 'try before you buy' there's a 'lite version' for testing it out that lets gives you all the same functionality, but limits resolution capture.

One horse open sleigh on my hearth. Low light, HDR+.

I've tried HDR, and I think they're worse.

Thanks for the recommendation.

I'm working on some Christmas medley's.
HDR+ Superb dynamic range (from bright white to jet black) and resolution. Sony's new IMX214 Exmor CMOS sensor is really excellent! (Tap the image to see it better.)

It seems as if your only acceptable solution is going to be get an iPhone since, in your opinion, it takes better pix.

Interestingly both the iPhone and the Nexus 6 use Sony sensors and lenses. The iPhone uses an 8 Megapixel Sony sensor and the Nexus 6 uses a newer 13 Megapixel Sony sensor.

Meaning that Apple has historically done a much better job with the software, but the potential is greater for the N6. It's certainly closed the gap a lot closer than earlier models, and in some cases bests the iPhone 6+ now - can't wait to see what the dev's can do with it now that they can actually work with it at a much deeper level (especially what they can do for those of us who aren't educated on manipulating all of the finer controls that are available).

Love pictures of an adorable cat like that---and cats in the sunshine, even better. Thanks for sharing.

Here is a cool comparison I did of my old Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 6 (hdr) and Canon Powershot sd750 point & shoot. Check the crop comparisons out. Hard to believe my Nexus 6 looks better than my point and shoot, given its in hdr mode, thats fine by me. Cool to have a cell phone that can compete with a basic point and shoot.

Nice comparison. The Nexus 6 image is obviously sharper, colors are richer, and the dynamic range of light to dark is obviously much wider.

Worth pointing out that that Canon model was released over 7 years ago. I doubt the Nexus 6 would fare as well against its descendant model.

To me the N6 shot looks the worst of the three. Significantly darker than the other two.

Darker, yes. Take a look at the Verizon sign - that should be a black background, and in the Nexus 6 shot it appears pretty close to life, whereas with the Nexus shot it is a noise-infested bluish black, and with the Canon shot it is a washed out grey. This ability to capture and portray black better did not keep the Nexus 6 from representing the white in the sign, or other colors, as brightly as the other two. I.e., the Nexus 6 offered better dynamic range/contrast, and that 'significantly darker' aspect would generally be construed as a positive thing.

The Nexus shot suffers from clearly poorer resolution and a substantial amount of video noise (of course, it's not exactly competing with its contemporaries), whereas the Canon shot appears to have comparable detail (of course, it's tough to tell without having full resolution images of each to compare) but is terribly washed out.

As to the color accuracy elsewhere, I could speculate and offer thoughts, but only the image's poster can attest to how they compare to the scene as he actually saw it.
