NEXUS 6 - LMY48W Build

Hey Guys,

I recently purchased an unlocked Nexus 6 phone from Best Buy. I turned the phone on with with a Straight Talk Sim card (Straight talk uses ATT network) and waited a a while for the phone to update (All the way to 5.1.1) and install my apps from backup.

I was on build 5.1.1 LMY48M

While waiting for Marshmallow I got a System Update notification that ended up being a security update that confused everybody thinking it was the Marshmallow update.

This security upgrade moved me to 5.1.1 build LMY48W

After the upgrade I signed up for Project Fi and everything works fine while still on 5.1.1 build LMY48W

Here is my question.

5.1.1 LMY48W is an ATT build that I was moved to because I had Straight Talk (ATT) as a carrier at the time of the System Update.
Now I am on Project Fi with the same ATT build 5.1.1 LMY48W. I don't really need to be on this W build. I should be on the 5.1.1 LVY48H build for project Fi.

According to Android Police 5.1.1 LMY48W is still pending ATT testing I assume. ATT is notorious for taking forever to get things done.

From Android Police:

5.1.1 LMY48M -> 5.1.1 LMY48T

5.1.1 LMY48M -> 5.1.1 LMY48W (AT&T Only)

5.1.1 LVY48F -> 5.1.1 LVY48H (Project Fi Only)

5.1.1 LYZ28K -> 5.1.1 LYZ28M (T-Mobile USA Only)

5.1.1 LMY48T -> 6.0 MRA58K

5.1.1 LMY48W -> 6.0 MRA58K - Coming soon! (AT&T Only)

5.1.1 LVY48H -> 6.0 MRA58K (Project Fi Only)

5.1.1 LYZ28M -> 6.0 MRA58K (T-Mobile USA Only)

If I factory reset my phone with my Project Fi SIM the phone should be updated based on my SIM to 5.1.1 LVY48H and I assume be upgraded sooner to Marshmallow without waiting for ATT

Do you think this will work?

Project Fi recommended to NOT do a flash install so that is the reason I am waiting for the OTA

Thank you All

Why does project Fi not recommend you flash the correct ROM?
My understanding is that OTA have to follow whats already on the device. So if its an ATT only ROM it will follow that path for the next OTA.
Same for TMO to TMO and Fi to Fi. If you have a ATT ROM it will not OTA to Fi as its crossing compatibility.

I have the same situation for the most part. Nexus 6 purchased unlocked from Best Buy. I have an AT&T SIM card. I also have a project FI sim card on order. I have the same version of Android 5.1.1 it is LMY48W.

Those OTA links were just published on Android Police in the past 24 hours. For Nexus 6 builds. I'm waiting for the OTA to hit my phone. I have been told that the OTA updates to the phone come from Google.

I also intend to use my project Fi SIM chip on a test basis to see if it works while retaining my AT&T sim to use when I need it. So I have no idea what build I would use if I were flashing it myself. I'm just waiting for the OTA to be pushed to my phone for marshmallow

Doing a factory reset didn't clear anything but my data. That is clearly not the right path to use

Apparently you get different opinions when you call Project Fi multiple times

I called again and yes they confirmed that the Lollipop Build I was on was wrong. I was on an ATT build when I should have been on a Fi build

That Fi agent told me that the only way to get to the correct build was to flash the phone and suggested the correct Lollipop Build to use.

I decided then to flash Marshmallow with no issues. Some of my Fi problems are gone now.

I tried this also, seems crazy, I bought this phone from Google but now it's the same as an AT&T branded phone. Makes no sense to me, I would have thought that a factory reset would have put the phone back to its original state, like new, no I see its am AT&T build e even after doing a factory reset. So I bought an unlocked Google phone from Google and I am still at the mercy of AT&T if and when they get around to approving the 6.0 update.

Not sure where to start with this one.

You still have an unlocked google phone. Its no where close to an AT&T branded phone, you have none of the bloatware on it and its not locked to AT&T. The problem is you used ATT service and for what ever reason Google/Motorola branched out based on certain carriers. My guess is radios / bugs / modems / features ( WiFi Calling and Band 12 VoLTE certification with TMO). All the ROMS are available for download. https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images?hl=en
The instructions are there. IF you dont want to wait for the OTA then you can go to the link and install it on your device.
Also when you factory reset a phone it deletes all user information. IT dowes not delete system data. So if you have accepted an OTA for the system those will remain in efect. Any updates from the play store will be deleted. But the core operating system will remain at what ever level it is prior to the wipe.

Thank you, I tried using Wugfresh but there is no option to go from LMY48W to MRA58K.

This is true, I bought mines direct from Motorola and my preferred network prior to activating it on AT&T, was GLOBAL, soon as I accepted an OTA from AT&T, Global disappeared and now its LTE. I was on LMY48M and yesterday got an OTA to LMY48W. I think there's one more small update to T, then should be ready to Marshmallow whenever AT&T decides to put it out.

I'm confused. My phone came from Best Buy. I am third owner. I use an ATT sim got updated recently to LYZ28M. According to the chart above that is for a T Mobile only phone??

Your the 3rd owner. So someone before you had TMO. In the beginning there was 1 rom. So if someone had TMO and the ROM got updated to a TMO only variant from that point on it would only accept OTA for TMO. No matter what carrier you have now the device has gone down the path of a ROM specific to TMO and as a result the OTA will only upgrade the ROM to the next version of the TMO OTA ROM.
Good news is your device is a Nexus. So you can follow the instructions on the link i provided and set your device to the carrier your on now. OR go to 6.0 and that seems to be for all carriers again.

So, will I eventually get the OTA for marshmallow?

Technically yes, Every body with a Nexus 6 should get an OTA to 6, when that is the part i dont know.

Wugfresh will still work. Just make sure you choose Nexus 6 any build. I was in your situation.

Also just an FYI.... The at&t, Verizon, and the unlocked Nexus 6 share the same firmware path. I'm not sure why it's being called at&t firmware...

Thanks, I got it to work but took the really long way around, I used Wugfresh to go back to LRX22c and just keep doing the OTA updates without a Sim card, it just kept updating using OTA and 6.0 just popped up as ready to download.

Welp...Unlocked Nexus 6, here. AT&T slipped a branding update on it. I feel like AT&T is doing this to interfere with Project Fi. The very thought of that steams me so bad I cannot stand it. But even if AT&T isn't monopolistically trying to do this, the fact that they are branding unlocked Nexus 6 to where only AT&T updates will occur, this is good enough reason to cancel out AT&T and never look back.

Without a doubt the most interesting post I've read so far about this.

Quote your sources sir!
