2 part question.

Is there a way to enable the dial pad to show up instead of favorites when you click the telephone icon?

2nd question All of my other android phones I could either dial by name as in spell it out using the alpha buttons or if I wanted to call my wife and her number is ie. 614-555-5555 I could dial 0067 on the pad and it was the only number with that combo and pop her name up. Now I have to dial 6145555 and it pops her name up. Is there a way to change this??

I came from a Moto RZR Maxx, went to the Samsung s6 (dialer worked great but no data and voice at the same time) Now to the nexus6

Thanks

Your first question I believe the answer is no, unless you download another app.
2nd question, do you mean suggestions as you start to dial the #?

I use TouchPal Contacts (also a dialer) and it does a lot of what you are saying. But it's pretty flaky and most of the menu is in Chinese... If you can figure out how to make it read in English I'll love you :-)

I LOVE the dialer on this phone. It's by far the best on any phone that I've ever had (Droid Incredible, Galaxy Nexus, Droid Maxx, Note 4). Smooth animations, sleek look, LOVE the Google integration and very responsive.

Having said that, when I dial by dialing the name of the person I'm dialing it shows the number and I can select it. Not sure what you mean.

Loving the real dial tones, I always hated the water drops sounds of my former S4, obviously I disabled those sounds back then and consequently missing the real dialing phone effect. This stock dial app is really great not to mention the fantastic speed dial features.

On TouchPal (sounds like the one this guy wants), you can call a contact right from the dial pad by keying in their name on the dialpad (much easier than keyboard) and swipe left. Or you can compose them a text by doing the same thing and swiping right. (those directions can be reversed if you want)

Very easy, quick, and you go to the same place for a text or a call. Very convenient. But some of the screens and setting are written in some Asian language I can't read, Japanese, Mandarin, etc... CooTek is located in China I think, so probably Mandarin?

See attached screenshots where I dialed the first couple letters on the dialpad to McNaughton-McKay and was able to swipe left to text and right to call, all on the same screen.

The first one I don't think is possible, but I don't mind that one because its convenient to have my speed dial contacts right there as soon as I open the dialer. It's pretty much two taps to call my frequently called contacts :)

As for your second point, it is possible to dial contacts using the short codes you mention. For instance, I just tried it on one of my contacts named Haley. As soon as I typed 425 in the dialer (which spells Hal) she immediately popped up as the only option, despite the fact that she doesn't have 425 in her number at all
