Nexus 6p dust accumulating within the camera visor(lens).

Hi There,
I am new to this forum. I recently purchased my nexus 6p and I love this thing. However, I have had an excessive amount of accumulation of dust in the camera visor area. I've never had a phone with this issue. I have a 4 year old droid bionic that has not been in its case and there is no excessive amount of dust in the camera lens. The Nexus 6p, however, has been having issues. I am using a Speck Candyshell grip case which was recommended to me by a google technician at a Nexus event in NYC I attended in December. I am videographer who constantly cleans lenses with microfiber cloths and a dust blower. I only keep the phone in its case either in my jeans or a dust-free area. I have cleaned the Nexus 6p with the blower and once with a industry recommended microfiber for camera lenses. However, I continue to have problems. I contacted google today and they recommended that I should replace the device with an RMA. I am now waiting for the replacement. While their service is phenomenal, I would like to understand the best method to clean and prevent this from happening again. I am nervous this will scratch the camera lens and effect the image quality or exposure. Does anyone have any answers? Thanks.

Welcome back! So you were seeing dust actually underneath the glass? And it wasn't like that when you got it? I would suspect that it was an isolated defect with that unit.

I believe it is underneath, but the dust keeps accumulating on the glass. I'm not sure why it so drawn to dust like a magnet. I've never had issues like this with previous phones. I'm afraid its going to create permanent smudges and scratches.

I definitely agree the nexus visor attracts dust but its not underneath the glass just in top of it

I'm not sure why it so drawn to dust like a magnet. I've never had issues like this with previous phones.

So, the reason why the dust is attracted has to do with a couple of things.

1. Phones these days have more electromagnetic parts than that of 3+ years ago. Because of these parts, dust can get attracted. If you live in a dry climate area like California or Arizona, the dust will get even more attracted. Not sure what the SAR levels are for this phone.

2. The glass uses a coating for finger prints and such. I know the Gorilla Glass from the 2014 Moto X used to have this issue and users complained about the collection of dust.

BTW, my phone is also collecting dust in the back, I just use a Microfiber cloth and clean it once a week.

Do you receive any scratches when you clean the visor with a microfiber cloth? I feel like the dust is creating permanent smudges. They're not exactly scratches. The microfiber cloth is not removing these smudges. This is my first replacement. I shipped out the defective phone earlier.

I clean my phone about once every 3-4 days with water and microfiber cloth. I have the graphite with Nexus microfiber case, and it didn't collect an abnormal amount of dust, nothing underneath the visor, so hopefully your replacement will solve the issue. And I've had mine for almost 3 months, no scratches as a result of my obsessive cleaning.

you can always slap a dbrand skin on the visor. they look cool enough and it'll ensure its protected from dust/scratches.

And the water isn't damaging that particular area? I would think that would damage the lens? I'm a little skeptical about dbrand, since its difficult to apply and also remove. The replacement has been fine so far, but unfortunately theres this permanent smudge. It's not a scratch, but almost looks like smears or fingerprints. The microfiber cloth couldn't remove this weird smudge. I never touched the visor, so this is kind of unusual.

Have you used some Windex and a microfiber? It's not going to scratch the lens, or glass. I wipe mine down everyday with disinfectant and a paper towel, after I leave the gym and have no scratches to the body or glass lens.

the smudge would drive me nuts, there's a good chance I'd return it.

no, the water doesn't damage the phone, so long as you use a little amount. I apply it to the cloth, not directly to the phone ... I use water/microfiber on all my electronics, been doing so for years and I've always had success.

the dbrand skin is simple to apply, although it does take a steady hand and more importantly, patience. they also have GREAT customer service, so if you mess up they'll mail you a replacement (that's not a policy, or in writing, but I know from experience and people on these forums).

they have a really nice YouTube clip on their website which shows you step by step how to apply it. I currently use the Nexus microfiber case, but I also have the clear Spigen so in a few months I'll slap that on along with the skin.

Good luck and don't settle. If you're like me and plan on keeping your phone for at least 2 years (even less), then you should exchange it if it bothers you.

Here's the link to that YouTube clip for DBrand:

I never use Windex or any other cleaner. Water is enough. Reason being, the Gorilla Glass isn't the same glass as a regular window. It has a coating and the chemical in Windex and most cleaners damage that coating. It's nothing you'll notice immediately, but over time it'll deteriorate.

Also, microfiber is lipophilic, so it attracts dust and dirt. Paper towels don't have that electrical charge so they simply don't do as good a job. plus the whole good for the environment thing!

The smudge is pretty annoying. I've only had the replacement for a few days. I will think about D-Brand. Since the replacement appears to have a slight scratch mark on the side and the Candyshell Speck Case is only increasing the damage, I may have to request for another replacement. We will see. I'll have to double check on it in a few days, but the problem is that the Candyshell grip case is almost impossible to remove and put back on. I'm afraid I'll damage the device even more. To be honest, I don't feel like replacing the phone again. However, square trade charges 75 deductible to replace phone and that would be my only other option in the future. I probably should have bought nexus protect instead.
