Evening All,

Proud new owner of the Nexus 7 16gb as of yesterday. Been playing about with a few different options for additional storage - the lack of SD card slot is my one and only criticism of the tablet, but i guess they want to push cloud storage.

I have a 1TB Samsung M3 External Hard drive which i would like to connect via my OTG cable.
After reading online, many posts say the Nexus 7 can power some drives, but not others, and the sign you're looking for is if the drive powers up and the disk starts spinning.

Now when i plug in my M3, it powers up, begins - and continues - to spin. Yet my Nexus Media Importer cannot detect the device. I know my OTG cable and device - (Nexus 7 + app) work fine, as i also have an 8gb Flash Drive which works absolutely fine.

Has anyone any experience of using HDs with their Nexus 7 and could please shed some light on this?

Many thanks

Eoin

You pretty much need a separate power supply for any hard drives. Flash memory is fine and a SSD might work, but not a regular drive.

I thought that may be the case, which is why i just ordered a usb battery pack. It just confused me as the drive powers up and spins as it does when connected to my pc.

Thanks

I have an external WD drive hooked up through wifi, and with an app from Google Play, I can save to or pull from that drive.
