Nexus 7 file sharing problem

I know this has been run at probably a thousand times. Tried using ES file explorer and can see all the folders on my desktop PC but says don't have permission to access. 2 other laptops connected to the network have no problem sharing/streaming files and not sure if this makes a difference, should the Nexus 7 show up as a network device on windows explorer like this PC and 2 laptops do? Searched and tried a lot of things but still won't allow access. Any suggestions/help would be appreciated.

It should show up as a mobile device and you likely need the USB drivers in order to view the contents.

Pretty sure it should show up as a network device on the desktop, which it doesn't (not sure why even though I can see the desktop's folders) Why USB drivers (and what drivers are they) since this is over wifi?

Sorry, I misinterpreted your post. I thought you were referring to how it should show up while connected to your PC via the USB cable. Maybe this article with help: Share files between Android and Windows with ES File Explorer | How To - CNET
