Nexus 7, type password to decrypt storage.....

My Nexus just locked me out asking for a password I never set. How do I scrub all and start all over. I was trying to install Kaspersky virus protection.

Just ran into this myself on an N7 I've had for a year. It appears that a runaway app ran down my N7 while in sleep mode and completely drained the battery within a day of full charging. After charging for a while I turned it on and got the issue with the shutdown and "flying pixels". Let it charge a good deal longer and when I booted it I got the password prompt to decrypt. Only way out of this was to start into recovery mode and then do a complete data wipe and factory reset.

The same thing happened to me. I've had my Nexus 7 for about one year. Something happened that completely drained the battery. I charged it and now when I turn it on, it prompts me to enter a password to decrypt storage. I've never set a password for this tablet. How do I start it in recovery mode in order to wipe it out and completely start over? I can't get to any other screen except this keyboard screen to enter my password.

My wife has used her Nexus s daily for over 18 months, and it was yesterday that it suddenly produced this message. I followed your instructions and it worked perfectly - so perfect in fact that, as she has a Google account, she could, with a few touches restore all contacts and gallery. Apps will need to be re-installed, but that's a small price to pay. Thanks so much.

Re: Samsung Galaxy Note II Encrypted password issues!!!

Hello all, I set up my samsung galaxy note II with the encrypted password, but dont want it. I know what the password is, how do I take it off. It is a nuasance to have to type in the password every time I turn on my phone.

Thanks for any help.

This is what I did and backed up my gmail account.

1. Power off
2. Hold Volume + , volume - and power at the same time until you get a green android image with the body opened with "Start" on the screen
3. Press Down till you get to recovery mode
4. Press power
Phone will reboot. You will then get same image of android (smaller) with red warning triangle
5. Wait a minute or two and then press volume + and power
6. Use volume down to select wipe data/factory reset and hit power
Select Yes - delete all user data and hit power
7. Once done select reboot system now and hit power

Note: In step 5. you just have to tap the power and vloume +. Don't hold them.

I applied this solution to the same problem with the Nexus 4 [phone] with one deviation - instead of choosing Wipe Cache Partition I choose Reboot/reset - and it worked perfectly. Thanks.

hey (:
i was wondering if there was any other way besides resetting it ? i have the galaxy nexus and its having the exact same problem and i really dont want to reset and potentially loose everything i have in there; i havent backed up anything since my charger doesnt connect to my computer

note : i didnt even have it turned off for a number of weeks, it just starting resetting itself one day and after about 28 hrs or so when it finally stopped , this appeared

Did any of you try to use your lock screen passcode? That worked for me. Bizarre that it was the same code but it worked.....

For me I had to set a numeric pin before encrypting the device. After encryption it asks for a password (and presents a keyboard - confusing!) for me as I had not set a password I tried the numeric screen lock pin. This worked.

you just saved me !!!! I was ready to smash my damn phone...thank you

If you are prepared to wipe out your entire device clean, then you can go to Android Device Manager, sign in to your Google Account that is associated with your device. If you have multiple devices, you will see a list of your devices when you click the name of your device, select your device and you will see "Ring", "Lock", "Erase". Select erase and restart your device. It should work after that.
