If you got to the "type password" prompt after encrypting your phone, just type the PIN you created when you started the encryption process. If the prompt was "type PIN" the answer would be much more obvious. HTH.

thanks for the useful advice, I think I have fixed my issue. almost 2 years later this problem still exists, I purchased a nextbook only a month ago from best buy, I woke up this morning and had this problem as all of you have mentioned. I did the factory reset as you suggested and that pesky type password to decrypt message is gone, sad I had to lose photos of my new grandson who was just born days ago but thankful to have my tablet working, I am curious if this is a bug or a hardware issue. To all those people who are so rude to suggest something is stolen, very sad our world jumps to that conclusion, thanks again to the people who actually offered useful suggestions.

IM with you here...My son just got a next book 8 today and I never did a password either for this. I set everything up for my son and he got on it and was having issues getting into a game and this pops up on me...and this is bought brand new from walmart about 3 hours ago

Same issue. I was the only owner of the device, it is clearly a bug and not a accidental locking or a stolen device. Mine was also powered off for quite some time before the issue occurred. Here are the instructions I used to do factory reset on my Nexus 7 Tablet that had this issue:

If your tablet is on, power it off.
Press and hold Power until the device powers on, then immediately press and hold Volume Down (while still pressing Power). You will see the word Start with an arrow drawn around it.
Press Volume Down twice to designate Recovery mode.
Press Power to restart into Recovery mode. You will see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark.
While holding down Power, press Volume Up.
Use the volume keys to scroll to "wipe data/factory reset" and press Power to select it.
Scroll down to "Yes - erase all user data" and press Power to select it.

This was truly helpful, I thought I had to go n buy a new one lol.... thank you very much!!!!

I own a Proscan, 7 inches. it off for a while. Shutdown. And now its on that Decrypt Storage Password thing.

But that's not the only bug I found.

Sometimes my tablet wont let me get on certain Apps. Such as Google Play, or Youtube. Claiming I needed to 'Retry my Wifi Connection' When its perfectly fine. So I am kinda afraid to reset my tablet. As all the apps will...disappear. and I might not be able to get them back.

I don't know whats wrong with it.
