Nexus 7: wifi issue

without the user having to manually configure those parameters, which is what you have to do when you select a Static IP address.

I don't manually input anything. I just save whatever is there when I switched it to Static. Ie, switch, then immediately hit save. That's why it has to be actively working when you make the change.

My guess is the protocol tries to switch the IP address and KitKat can't make the switch on the fly, so to speak. That's why having a Static IP works or reconnecting via toggling Airplane Mode. That would also explain why it can't connect when switching between 4g and 3g, but keeping it locked on 3g solves the problem. (I also have it on my phone.)

I've just started to have wi-fi problems in the last two days. My Nexus 7 (2013) is running KitKat 4.4.4. All has been well until yesterday, when I turned the wi-fi on and, though I was told it was on, I got no bands in the strength indicator and I could not use Play Store or go on the web or do anything else that needed wi-fi. Someone else a few feet away from me in the same room using the same wi-fi network had no problem whatsoever getting wi-fi. I finally rebooted the tablet, and that cured the problem. I was hoping that was a one-time hiccup, but today it happened again. I'm not sure this time whether the wi-fi was already on and suddenly went from fine to awful or whether I turned it on and couldn't get a usable signal. Again, I rebooted, and all was well.

I don't have any idea why this is happening, nor what I can do about it other than reboot. I can't change from DHCP to a static IP because there are several computers and other devices using the same wi-fi network, and so the IP address my device uses varies depending on what other devices are also on and in what order they turned on. Right now, the last number of my IP address is 102, but that can vary anywhere from 100 to 105. This has not been a problem, I mention it only because I think it rules out the feasibility of my changing the setting to a static IP. (And it's not completely clear to me that even a static IP number would solve this problem.) I'm reporting it mostly just so that it's clear that the problem isn't limited to the folks who have reported it in the past.

It appears, after much searching, that there are two distinct issues:
1. Device Wi-Fi appears to be "on," but won't connect to router; and
2. Device Wi-Fi cannot turn on (On-Off switch is grayed out.
Most of the what I've found in numerous forums (fora?) seems to devolve to #1, even if #2 is the original topic. Has anyone found a solution to #2, that the device Wi-Fi is completely unavailable? It's hard to implement the suggestions related to #1 when the tablet thinks it has no Wi-Fi to turn on...

Welcome to the forums!
Has anyone found a solution to #2
Have you tried reloading the firmware? That would be my first step.

Also using Nexus 7 with same issue. Says I'm connected, but i'm not. Tried changing the IP address to "static" and it wouldn't give me the option to connect. I'm thinking like other user, that there may be some kind of "lock out bug." When this happened, i had just come home from being at a friend's house where i connected to their wifi and it worked fine. Done everything, twice, except a reset... Guess that's next. Grrrr so frustrating! Please help!

You have to actually be connected in order to change it.

Settings -> Wi-Fi -> long-press the SSID of your router -> Edit -> check the 'Advanced settings' checkbox -> change the DHCP setting to Static IP and then enter the IP address that you want to use.

Be sure it's on the same subnet as the rest of your devices (usually 192.168.0.xxx) with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 if it prompts for one.
And of course, don't use an IP address already in use by a different device on your network.

OK so I have had this issue with my nexus for about a month now. I can't do anything with the router because this is my classroom tablet and I can't mess with the school's router. I want to try changing to static but I know know how to find what ip address to change it to. Can anyone offer any assistance? This is getting ridiculous that I have to turn my WiFi on and off every couple of minutes to ensure that I actually have data.

Oh and I upgraded to Android 5.0 but the same issue is happening.

When the phone is connected to the router and *you have internet* long press the SSID and select modify this network. Then you can change DHCP to Static. You don't have to do the rest of that above.

If I long press and select modify network, advanced options, dchp to static, it won't let me save the changes to the network. The save option isn't clickable.

Because you aren't connected to the network.

So I've been having this problem again A LOT lately. I recently made a change to my router settings and it must be causing the problem - I switched the channel setting to auto. Before it was just on channel 1. I wonder if I'm now losing WiFi as it scans and switches channels. The problem is on everything we own, not just the mobile devices but I'm more sensitive to it on here due to past problems. Anyway it's something to check on your routers if you've tried all the suggestions and still have the problem. As soon as I remember how to log back into my router, I'm changing it back to channel 1.

@gnr_2

Install Wifi Analyzer on your device and walk around the area. See which of the non-interfering channels (1,6,11) has the least overlap with nearby devices.

I am connected. I just tried it now again and it doesn't give me the option to save, yet I was able to post this immediately afterwards.

When I said connected I meant, it is your active SSID and the internet is working when you try. If that's the case, I'm out of ideas. I've never tried doing it on corporate server where real IT guys are involved so maybe something is blocking the change.
