Nexus 7 will lead Android tablets to overtake the iPad

I don't think your generalization is either apt or supported by current statistics.

But they'll return their tablets to Best Buy after they realized the Android tablet they bought isn't an iPad. :)

You don't think having to send out numerous emails to developers every time the OS is updated to beg them to fix their damned apps isn't enough of an incentive to just not bother with the an entire ecosystem? What a ridiculous proposition.

In most cases, they are fixing the problems. It just takes time and resources to do it and their priorities may not line up with yours.

I'm not attacking - I'm curious. Like what can't you do? My applications are primarily drawing, note taking, watching movies, math (I'm an engineer). I do miss some of the drawing apps, as I said. But my viewpoint and application is my own - someone elses will be different and I am sure I am missing some information.

This is my main use case for my wife's iPad.

Quick photo editing (of Canon RAW files).

I too am a Canon DSLR user (hobby). Anyway, editing RAW files is quite a task for a table and one of those things not ideal to do on a tablet. I user PhotoMate to view my RAW images on Android.

iOS doesn't have anything as powerful as is does for the Mac, like Aperture. What do you use on the iPad that has decent RAW editing capabilities?

We use Photoshop Express and Filterstorm on the iPad. These are just for quick edits when my wife and I feel like posting or sending something rather quickly.

The more tech savvy, which is what we usually have on forums like this, frequently miss the significant draw of iOS- It just works. Well. This may not seem like much to us who like flexibility and can figure out different nuances easily, but this isn't the majority. People want it working yesterday, and they want it to work without having to read a manual, or get support, and damn sure don't want to have to have to contact a developer. I own and love both formats but as staunch Android supporters, many have lost sight of how much more intuitive iOS still is. You don't have a Settings option in one app where another is using a Menu key. You don't have 47 sources and apps to play your music from. Its seemless and say what you will about an open OS and all the potential it brings, but just like in the workplace, too many hands in the operation can and often leads to confusion. We all love this aspect of choice that Android gives us, but that's not for everyone.

I agree with this.

one of the big things I argue when people talk about the android vs iOS debate. on iOS things just work and they all work the same pretty much. It is this reason Android has this stink that its amateur and not as clean and easy as iOS.

I wonder if it occurs to people that things just work because there's not a lot there. Take mouse support in iOS. It doesn't exist. I had to jailbreak my iPad to get a mouse and keyboard working together. It's kind of quirky, but it works. Same for widgets. I now have (on my iPad) the ability to toggle wi-fi, bluetooth, auto-brightness, etc. in the notification pull down.

So by leaving features out, there is less to go wrong and the basics just work. I'm not for or against that, as long as I have a work-around (rooting Android or jailbreaking iOS).

So much truth in this.

yeah but thats the tech savy part of you doing all that and respect what you are saying.

but to most people using a mouse and keyboard on a touchscreen tablet makes no sense..

When I was on iOS I never cared about where the bluetooth, wifi, etc settings were because I was just used to how iOS was setup.

For a first time user they aren't going to complain saying why is the Bluetooth button in the settings app? They just will accept it is there and be happy with it.

I get what you are saying now that I have and own both iOS and Android, but when I was on iOS I never complained about the lack of features I never experienced or had in the first place.

But for the most part iOS just works. All the settings are in the Settings app. All the music is in the ipod app, etc.

I like both worlds, but each have advantages over another. iOS symmetry is an advantage over Android IMO.

I know what you mean. I didn't think about using a mouse on the iPad until I did it on my Android tablet.

For me, a perfect tablet would be the things I like about my iPad, with the things I like about Android. I don't know if that will ever exist.

lol I know. its a shame they just can't steal from each other and make the perfect OS

In the end for some reason my fav tablet OS is WebOS anyways. Don't know why, just enjoyed it the most.

Android is better now that I have used both iOS and Android, but again its just the good job Apple does with marketing the iPhone that drew my attention. They had a great display up, I walked over and played with the iPhone 3G back in the day at a local phone booth and was hooked. I went in to get a Blackberry 9000 lol. Walked out with an iPhone 3G.

It was hard to get me away from anything other then iPhone/iOS for awhile. I guess I was brand loyal. But now that I have used Android for a bit I would get an Android phone if I renewed.

I would never buy a brand new macbook or iMac... but man do they do a good job at marketing those. The amount of people I see buying one is insane. It has to be the sexy white that wins people over lol

So again, quick office pro HD does not work. A different version works, which costs another $15. This is exactly my freaking point. Who the hell wants to rebuy their apps every time there is an OS update?

No, that's not the point you made. You said you could not do light word processing. I said you could and proved it. In addition, Kingsoft office suite works and is *free*. So yeah, shame on Quick Office for making you buy it twice. Not Googles fault that QuickOffice screwed the pooch though.

.

And that's where windows has them beat, and Android to a lesser extent. You shouldn't have to pre-plan for a mouse to get it to work.

Someone on here mentioned plugging a Nexus into a Mac, it did nothing. When my computer was purchased the Nexus wasn't even a dream, yet when I plugged mine in Windows found software to make it work. Granted the MPC standard was in place, but my point is any USB device tells windows what it is and windows will usually find a way to make it work in some fashion. Android is a little more work but the apps are there for the taking.

They are doing it backwards. They are thinking of what they want you to have, and locking it down. Windows and Android think of what you need, and stop there. The rest you get as you want it.

As far as rebuying apps I've had that happen. It seems to depend on the publisher. My Plants vs. Zombies won't propogate because the version I bought isn't the same as the one for other devices. It was (if I recall, it's been some time) optimized for the Kindle. To get it on my Nexus I have to buy the standard version. However other apps are pushing through. I bought a wallpaper for my Google TV and it immediately appeared as available on both my Kindle and Nexus.

Right here is my problem right now. There is actually a long list of things that I can't do on my nexus that are easily accomplished on my iPad. And even most of the things I can do on both are much easier and more intuitive to do an iPad. Other than the size, I am having a hard time finding a single thing the nexus does substantially better than an iPad.

Text/email/call spoofing, faster browsing, tegra games look better, perfect size for reading, giant GPS with my homemade car dock it is basically the perfect car console with my phone tethered, unlimited storage with my 128 GB flash drive, trippy live wallpapers to look at when I get blasted and Google music. Because you know you won't be listening to your pirated music through iTunes.

Most of those are subjective as well. While I agree with most of them, some find it easier to do on an iPad (or other non-Android device). Faster browsing for example, some sites load quickly on the iPad, and vice versa. I can tether a phone to my iPad too.

BTW, would love to see a pic of the car dock. I was thinking about doing the same thing with my unused PlayBook.

So basically, Apple is like the really reliable dope dealer who is always there when you need a bag and talks constantly about how great his products are, but all he sells is seedy mersh. For people who are noobs to smoking and have never had anything better, he's the bomb. Android is kind of a flaky dude, but he's got like 10 different strains of bomb hydro and edible and hash oil to boot. His customers just can't ever go back after they smoke his stuff. They're always confused why people buy their sacks from ol' Apple, but all Apple's customers care about is his reliability.

For sure, I'll take one when I get off of class. I made it with my 3D printer.

I just thought this was funny. Im no expert or anaylist and while i have a Nexus 7 I love, I dont think in the next two years Android tablets will outsell the iPad. It might be on its way too, but it wont outsell it. Just look, Apple holds 68% of the tablet space.

IDC: Apple's still king of the tablet hill with 68 percent of the market -- Engadget

Read the article posted in the first post. Android is taking tablet market share twice as fast as it did smartphone market share. If it keeps gaining market it's it's current rate, it will overtake Apple by the end of next year. I say 2 years just to hedge my bets.

So an Android tablet works for you, doesn't mean that its he be all/end all of tablets for the rest of the world. Its great you can do all that. My iPad does everything I need it to do as well, besides the portability. That's why I have an N7.

Oh btw- iTunes plays my pirated music just fine.
