Clearly you are referring to the desktop software, not the ecosystem.

None of the current iOS devices require using the iTunes desktop client.

Short version, Apple mobile users are free to abandon it based on purchased app investment only. They have little loyalty beyond the small cult numbers. ITunes on droid would literally kill them and having it on PC's already is damning enough. Times will change much faster than many think.

It comes down to audience. Apple wasn't the first into the smartphone game. The revolutionary thing about what Apple initially did was make use easy. They created a smartphone for the masses (vs. smartphones for business). The simplicity of their approach is what shot them to the top.

Android has a stigma of being for nerds, being for tinkerers.

iTunes on Droid? Lol.

That's where it gets interesting. The profits are largely from iTunes according to people who have access to the shareholder meetings.

It wouldn't surprise me. In my own experience, iOS users are simply more likely to spend money on apps.

Though Apple's incredible scale probably allows them to make good profit on hardware.

Nexus 7 is great. But there is so much distance between Android and Apple in tablet market share right now. I doubt it'll be the Nexus 7 that will lead Android tablets in eclipsing Apple tablet market share, but maybe the a later Nexus tablet.

But Nexus 7 is probably going to give Android a good kick start in that direction. Samsung, Motorola, Toshiba, Lenovo, just about everyone has been really disappointing this year. Only bright spot seems to be ASUS and maybe Acer. This the Galaxy Tab 2 suppose to be a weird joke I don't get and the Galaxy Note 10.1, WTF Samsung?

Apparently Google and ASUS have to do this on their own, because the other Android tablet manufactures really aren't doing a damn thing right now.

I am not discounting Microsoft either. I don't have any plans on getting a Windows 8 tablet, seems like they'll be too expensive with almost no real tablet optimized apps in the beginning. But they are tying their tablets tightly with Windows and Xbox though and who knows what impact that'll have.

PS. And Google hopefully will have a Nexus 10 out this year. 7 inch tablet is nice. But unfortunately I'm not selling my iPad 3 until I have a 10 inch Nexus tablet (or maybe a Transformer Infinity with Jelly Bean and the fixed IO issue).

Actually the article was suggesting pretty much what you said, it's a good nudge towards dominating market share. Apparently, Android tabs are taking market share from apple twice as fast as android phones were before victory in that market.

Yeah, I am bashing the Nexus, because I was really excited to get it, and I'm abhorred by the customer service from the Google play store. Maybe I'm expecting too much that a $250 device should not have loose adhesive crackles when I touch the touchscreen. And I remain unconvinced that we with screen lift are actually in the minority here.

And Apple sells how many ipads to get a few problem threads? How many Nexus 7s have Google sold? Many GameStop stores had only 2-3 in stock from the get go; the vast majority sold are preorders from Google. The concept of prevalence is your friend.

You guys can argue the merits of Android all you want, but what's not disputable is that the Android platform overtook the Iphone's IOS problems and all, and now it's taking tablet market share from Apple twice as fast as it took phone market share. It doesn't take a genius to see where this is going. Windows did the same thing, back in the day. Whenever someone offers a more diverse product range with a more open environment at both the high and low price range and allows it to be used by any manufacturer, Apple soon becomes a niche product. History repeats itself and Apple never learns.

I'm not an Apple fanboy or anything, but something that sticks out about Apple is the simplicity of it. My Mom loves her iPad and could pick up on it right away. She has troubles navigating around on Android due to so much openness to it.

I think thats where Apple shines. In keeping things simple for the non tech savy people. For me I love Android and probably will never go back to iOS, but do love my iPhone and the App Store they have. Also love how they only have pretty much one phone and one tablet. It keeps things simple. Where as Android is open to so many companies that it floods the market with crappy tablets and phones.

Just my two cents. Interesting debate though.

You should get a Kindle Fire for those who don't want to mess with a full Android. There's a simple elegance to the design. You can search youtube for examples if need be. I'd have that over an i anything due to the pricing discrepancy.

I didn't say that Android is the platform for nerds and tinkerers. In my experience it just has the perception of being for nerds and tinkerers.

Android has the stigma of being too complicated. Not that I believe Android is more complicated but you can't deny that the learning curve for iOS isn't as steep as the learning curve for Android.

That said, it doesn't matter if the Nexus 7 and then the other Android tablets steal marketshare from Apple if Apple continues to make money hand over fist.

There is no stigma attached to phones anymore. Consumers get what that like, and that's it. But you'll have your group of hardcore Android/Apple/Microsoft/Blackberry fans out there with their brand loyalty. That doesn't make them nerds, geeks technophobe or anything else. Just a smartphone user like you and me.

Not true actually. Apple made $108 billion in revenue for Fiscal Year 2011.

iTunes sales accounted for $1.5 billion (6%) of Apple's revenue.

iPhones (43%), iPads (19%), iPods (7%) and Macs (20%) account for 89% of Apple's revenue. (All of this info is readily available from Apple's Earnings Report for 2011...yes, I read it).

Apple makes a killing by overcharging for their hardware, then hooking people with the iTunes ecosystem. Then they release new hardware that is the greatest thing ever created, so everyone has to have it or feel left out. Oh yeah, and it has a new connector, or it's slightly bigger/rounder/squar(er)?, so you have to buy all new accessories too.

See, again I think you are way off base. iOS is a fluid, solid OS. It's meant for ease of use. There is a big difference between that and targeting a group of people that don't know how to use technology at all. If you target only that group, you are alienating a huge audience. People are used to technology, not just in their phones but in cars, homes, appliances, etc. It's not a "dumbed-down" anything; just the opposite.

Same idea for Windows Phone.

I do think Android is losing it's "it's only for hackers" label. Mostly in part to a maturing OS. There's no need to hack the OS anymore because Google is adding the features users want and need. What hurts Android is how long it takes for the phones to get the latest OS.

This is OS vs OS, not device vs device. Only one company develops android. Only one company develops ios. This is about which is a better platform. This is not about how many models you have. If it was Blackberry would be dominating the market. Apple's not losing ground in mobile phones? Apple went from having most the smartphone marketshare to having 30 something percent. And Apple is currently LOSING tablet market share. Google is taking tablet market share a little over twice as fast as they took smartphone market share. These are facts. This is the same argument Mac fans made back I'm the 80's ad 90's before Windows took over.
