Nexus 9.... I went with a SHIELD Tablet instead

Re: Nexus 9.... I went with a Shield tablet instead

Displaywars.com is a useful site site for comparing screen sizes. I'd post a direct link but I can't yet.

Re: Nexus 9.... I went with a Shield tablet instead

Love this discussion. The NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet is an awesome device. I've been using mine for general web surfing, multimedia & gaming. Over all the design of the tablet is pretty damn good. The front facing boom sound speakers, nice camera's (although not high on anyone's priority list for a tablet), display is crisp and responsive to touch. The DirectStylus 2 is a huge upgrade over the original found in the Tegra Note. The expandable storage is huge for many and given the fact that your getting almost pure Android w/ fast updates direct from NVIDIA its a win win.

I'm sure I'll have my time with the Nexus 9 and I look forward to seeing how it performs within the HTC shell with the NVIDIA Tegra K1 64-bit SoC.

Really looking forward to putting these two up against each other in some real world tests once the N9 is on the streets to play with.

I love these discussions also. I was all set for that nice new nexus moment, that was until best buy had one and I got to play with it..... The Nvidia shield Tablet.

What a beast, feels great and well built, has a nice screen at the ratio I like, has boomsound and then some, with a handy stylus. Then there is the small matter of the 32bit soc, the keplars the grunt in these tabs and I dare say over the next 6 months the Denver 64 will do nothing over the quad.

I'd love a nexus... Been with nexus since the HTC One but this really stock super fast gaming tablet ended up in my hands and it's been a game changer.

So now I will own the shield tab ( will be here tomorrow can't wait).

And the money left is going on the 64gb Nexus 6 so win all round for me

Charge it up, grab the OTA updates and enjoy!

Feel free to report back with thoughts once you share some quality time with your new toy.

The 4:3 ratio is awesome.

I'm actually ok with the 4:3 ratio. It will make reading books and surfing the web much more enjoyable. My N7 was too thin for specific websites. Yes, I'm aware that movies won't be true full screen but I'm ok with that.

That's why I buy iPads.

I had the shield tablet since launch and I ended up selling it for the N9.

The reason why I decided over the shield is, because the display is really bad and colors reproduction is off. The battery is not very good and there is also no cases or accessories available other than what Nvidia has.

Also, it's extremely painful to hold back of the sharp edges.

It's a good tablet, but I think the N9 will be better. I've owned EVERY Nexus tablet and have never been disappointed.

I purchased the N7 (2013) last year after selling my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and have been satisfied ever since with Nexus. If I didn't have a few issue with my tablet (touch sensitivity and screen rotation), I'd keep it. But those issues are kinda forcing my hand in getting a new tablet. I'm extremely interested in the new N9.

But what is 64bit going to do for you that I can't do on the 32bit, right now its nothing. Maybe next year but also the fact the N9 is $499 for 32gb its even more of an off putter. With 64bit comes larger app installs and I don't the think the 16gb is going to cut it.

Basically the Nvidia shield tablet will become the 2nd fastest tablet on the market when the N9 comes out but will have SD expandable storage, stylus support and $125 less and that's only if I went with the 16gb N9. If I went with the 32gb that's over $200 more.

Like I said, 64bit isn't going to mean much over the next few months, otherwise the N6 would have been 64bit also

I guess it all in what you use your device for since I see nothing the Shield does that my 2013 or 2012 Nexus 7 doesn't do with that logic. The Shield and Nexus 7 are all 32 bits and have enough horse power to run most apps today. Again you ignore the much higher quality graphics with shadowing and lighting effects with 64 bits that add realism to graphics applications. Plus you ignore the wider 64 bit bus to memory that video Frame rate will benefit from a wider data path to memory. The 64 BitTegra K1 gives you the GPU that were the quality of the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 that the Shield doesn't. In a cell phone I wouldn't care about 64 bits with a limited size screen and a cell phone is more of a communication device. A tablet is more like a laptop type of device that should be 64 bits.

Android 4.4.4 will be the last major release of 32 bits with Android 5.0 Lollypop that supports true 64 bits. I have nothing against the Shield but I am going to future proof myself with only 64 bit Android devices from this point on. There is day coming that Apps won't be designed to work in 32 bit devices as Android 32 bit OS fades into the sunset. I could never recommend at 32 bit Android tablet to any of my friends since 32 bits days are numbered between both Apple and Android moving up to 64 bits. It won't be long before you see App developers having 64 bit only Apps since that is the industry standard now. Apple just announced that starting February 1, 2015, all new iOS apps uploaded to the App Store must include 64-bit support. App developers are moving to 64 bits or they will be out of business.

I think the display is down to personal preference as I don't have an issue with it.

As for no cases I have to disagree, amazon and eBay carry all kinds of cases http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/s/ref=i...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU3988882

The sharp edge thing I've seen other people say so it must be an issue. Just not one I've had to deal with.

Just like to point out that I'm not saying the N9 is crap, just reasons why I'm finding the shield a good value alternative

I just canceled my N9 order and am staying with my 32gb Shield Tablet. I like the fact that I can move apps to my micro SD card. The tablet will receive Lollipop very quickly, and it works great. No issues whatsoever. I would prefer a little larger screen and battery, which the N9 offers, but not at the expense of my ability to store apps, which are getting larger and larger each day. Now when we have more tablet options, which include screen size, battery capacity, as well as current OS versions, I'll consider those options. Today, I am cool with my Shield Tab.

With Android Kit Kat and Lollypop Apps CAN write DATA ONLY to app-specific folders on the SD Card. They can't store executable Apps on the SD card on the Shield tablet. The Shield will store App data in the same way that the new Nexus 9 would if it had a optional USB Thumb Drive.

Android KitKat 4.4.1 significantly changes the way applications are allowed to use SD cards. If you use SD Card to store data, please read here for further details. Read #2 on the Shield website

2) Third party Apps (such as ES File Explorer) no longer have general access to write to the SD Card in KitKat. This was a change in behavior made by Google for security purposes and is not something we are allowed to support or work around starting with Kitkat.

3) Apps CAN write to app-specific folders on the SD Card using a new API available in Kitkat. For instance, App-XYZ can write to its own folder on SD Card, but cannot write to App-ABC’s folder. Note that your Apps may need to be updated to support this SD Card write capability.

Cool site. Here is a link to the usable space comparison between Shield Tablet size and Nexus 9 size screen

Thanks for that link! That is great to see. So the Nexus 9 is going to give you a slightly larger image even on 16:9 content.

The SD card changes are really only an issue for file explorer apps. Media can still be read out of any folder and apps can store their own data (which is the important part, executables are typically very small compared to the resources) in their own folder.

So, whether the device is a N9 or a Shield Tab, you are able to move certain data/apps to the micro SD card, and there should be no functional difference between the two devices in that regard?
