Nexus S vs EVO/EVO 3D

Thanks to craigwann and michaelp68 for chiming in with Pre related comments.

The main reason I don't take the plunge right now is fiscal responsibility. $200 is $200. Anything short of a warranty replacement isn't going to happen right now and for the foreseeable future. I have a spare Pre that is in new condition and, when/if my current one dies, I will activate that one. Who knows how long they will collectively last, but, it will save me money in the mean time.

While I appreciate the idea of new phone eligibility every year (I have that too), it's still $200 per year, often with the hassle of mail in rebates. I really like the whole look and feel of the Nexus S. But, I have to consider that, when the time comes, maybe more firepower to start will be better for someone who doesn't change phones every year or two.

For anyone interested, here is an article about just some of the dual core phones rolling out, cross-provider, this year. It's a pretty good indication of where the smartphone industry is headed and maybe a harbinger of what to expect if you make anything but a short term commitment to a single core processor. Dual Core Android Phones in 2011

Hi everyone,

Current Pre user PROBABLE future Android user. I've been impressed by the fact that, despite being a year old, and despite the bells and whistles of the Samsung Galaxy class phones, the EVO has remained the best rated Android phone on the market and Sprint's flagship device.

I will admit, when I leave WebOS, it will be reluctantly, and more due to the fact that Sprint and HP/Palm dropped the ball on the platform. I believe it is the best OS no one cares about and would love to see Android emulate their multitasking, because I will miss that most of all. But, be that as it may, I will only keep my Pre running on spit and nickles for so long, then it's on to a supported device.

I liked the look of the Nexus S. It has the smaller, smoother form-factor of the Pre and the My Touch, with an interface that seems more user friendly (a la the My Touch), and some pretty nice specs.

But, after "suffering" with a Pre with a 600Mhz processor (overclocked to 1.05Ghz) and 256MB of RAM, I have to admit, the EVO 3D, with the dual core processor and 1GB of RAM has it over the single core processor and 512 MB on the Nexus. Will this show any visible performance difference to the user? Will there be apps or other functionality that comes down the pipleline, that takes advantage of this and makes it worth the firepower?

Also, I've had a Samsung phone before (WAYYYY Back with the very first alleged 3G phones in the early 2000's and it got terrible reception. Has this improved?

Battery life isn't a real concern. I will use power and app management software and an extended battery (where possible) to take care of this, so it's all about the look, feel, build quality, and performance of the phone.

If you were coming from a Pre, which would YOU buy?

Thanks!

Coming from a Pre that broke and now I have a HTC Hero, I'd say get the Evo 3D. Thats what I plan on getting anyways... I would get the Pre3 but something about paying $10 for "premium" data on a non 4G phone seems ridiculous!

Wear and Tear

It looks like I am not the only Pre user doing their research.

I picked up a Pre day one and have had it replaced 3 times.

I am a Blacksmith by trade with lots of metal dust and an all around rough environment. The Pre just can't handle it. I tape the speaker holes which I found gives me about 2 weeks before the speaker goes out or is so quiet I might as well have the ringer off(as opposed to a week without tape). After about a month dust is under the camera lenses and the pictures just get grainier and grainier.

I am happy with ghost Armour or invisible shield to protect the body but I kinda want to make sure the environment where I am most of the time doesn't destroy the inner workings. So my question is does anyone have any thoughts on which of these two phones will have a bit more protection on the inside. Can anyone relate?

I use my phone for e-mails with customers, pictures of products or updates for customers.

I have only owned palm smart phones (650, 700, pre) but am ready to move on, I love what the Pre should be.

dbtabasco, I'm a blacksmith too!(ok, hobbiest really, but I've done it for over 15 years. I have a pre & am looking @ the Nexus too. Got the same speaker issue too. Small world!

It is a small world, any reason your looking at a nexus over a evo 3d? I like the idea of both, especially the constant updates from google one of my favorite things about the pre. But I also want my phone to work and not work around my phone.

PS I have been blacksmithing for 11 years and purchased the shop I learned in about 4 years ago.

honestly, most of it is availability. I played with the TMo one & really liked it too. If I like it, I'll keep it, if I like the 3d better, I'll sell it on clist & get that one. Either way I get the 4" + slab that I've been wanting, other than having webos on it. The ?exus seems to be the closest I'll come to that, since palm is so far behind.

I have an Epic... customized.. and love it. I don't know if going to the Nexus S would be worth it. Its newer, ya. Thats it. Last i knew Nexus S was lacking an sd card expansion slot (deal breaker on its own), and while i'm getting used to swype, i still like the full qwerty keyboard. I probably will get a new device when my upgrade comes in september... but i wont pick a phone up that does not have a solid rooting community behind it, and nothing else available through sprint even makes me consider leaving my epic (so i'll probably end up switching back to my epic after the mandatory leave-active stage passes. like 60 or 90 days i think). Its a cool new device... but <3 Epic 4g. Maybe i'll pick this up, baby it for 90 days, and sell it off >.<

Not sure if Sprint Nav will be included but I went from the Pre to the Epic which does have both sprint Nav and Google Nav and I use Google Nav almost exclusively. It works great, I wouldn't worry too much if Sprint Nav is not included. I just hate that Sprint is taking my premier status away before I can up grade to the Nexus S 4G and reduced cost... That being said, it seems this is only $399 without a contract which seems like a steal. ($199 with $200 contract extension rebate)

I callled Sprint and complained because my wife and son got the full $150 upgrade and i was only getting the $75 and had to wait untill like Feb of 2012. They did some of the "well let me see what i can do" and i got the upgrade reinstated....

What to do, what to do???

I am on my 3rd BB Tour (been on the same one since last September) and am finally due for a long-needed upgrade on Sunday. Here's my dilemma:

Ever since I heard about the specs on the Evo 3D I have wanted it. I don't really care about the 3D feature as much as I do for the dual core and gig of ram. My current phone has 256mb of ram and I don't even know what the processor speed it. For that reason, I want the most spec'd out phone I can get my hands on.

Along comes the Nexus S 4G. I have not been an Android user but prior to picking up my blackberry I tied to wait patiently for Sprint to get an Android phone--they moved too slowly and I wound up with the BB, which I have been fairly happy with. I do not really care for the Samsung UI that they typically use (my brother has an Epic). I really like the HTC sense UI (especially the new lock screen on 3.0). Nexus S specs seem to be slightly behind the curve with the half a gig of ram and single core 1ghz processor, however I understand the importance of being first in line for software updates.

I'm assuming the release date for the Evo 3D will be some time in June--my dilemma is whether or not it's worth it to be patient and wait the extra time for the phone with the most cutting edge hardware or if I should jump on the Nexus bandwaggon and be basking in update bliss for the time I have the device.

Any advice?!

It will not have the Samsung UI. It's pure Android. And it's beautiful.

I say go to BB and play with the tmobile version and see if it feels right for you. It's really personal preference. They will both be great phones.

It's pure Android (Dev device)....it'll have a bigger dev community than the Epic.

Hello all,

Looks like this thread might be dead, but I'll give this a shot anyways... I've noticed the focus of most of these convos have been about the Evo 3D and Nexus. For me though, since my upgrade is during this month, getting the Evo 3D is entirely out of the equation.
So excluding Evo 3D and pitting just the Evo 4g vs the Nexus against each other, would Nexus be the better choice? I love my Evo that I have right now, but whichever phone I decide to stick with (Also looking at the Arrive, which looks very attractive to me, and I don't know why. Windows 7 just seems fairly well designed on that phone IMO) will be what I'm sticking with for the next two years, most likely.
I dig the screen quality of the Nexus, along with the possibility of getting first dibs on software updates and being a pure android phone. Does anyone really use those extra apps Sprint sneaks in anyways?
The cons of the Nexus aren't that big of a bother, as 16 gigs would be enough memory for me, so no SD cards is fine. I'm also not huge on camera quality either. Really, I just want a phone that lets me zip around the web quickly, play silly app games and keeps me up to date on my text and e-mails.

Although I really will miss the ability to turn my phone into portable hard drive... Despite being the oldest of three, the original Evo really is a great phone.

Anyhoo, any possible opinions I could get to help make my decision less difficult?

Most likely the EVO 3d will come out early June, so there shouldn't be that long of a wait. Although I agree, for a pure google experience, the Nexus is the way to go.

True, I understand that. But my upgrade is this month, and not in June. So if I wanted to get the Evo 3D, I would have to pay full retail, which I am not looking to do.

But thank you for the input =)

Your upgrade doesn't last just for a month. If you're considered eligible, you're eligible until you upgrade.

I don't think you have to use your upgrade the month you get it, unless you are on some special plan. waiting an extra month or so shouldn't effect your plan or upgrade.

Like others have said, your upgrade doesn't expire. You don't have to use it this month, so no you wouln't be paying full retail for the EVO 3D if you decided to get that in June.

Example, I become eligible for my upgrade June 1st. That means at any point forward I can use my upgrade whenever I am ready. Nothing wrong with holding onto an upgrade.

I'll have to check to make sure, but I'm fairly certain that I only have this month, as I am in a specific situation. I used to be a premium member, but apparently some things were changed and I no longer meet the requirements (the guy at the store said something about needing to be part of a everything and family plan). So this month I'm being 'godfathered' into a final yearly upgrade, and my impression was that I only have this month to respond before I have to wait another year.

I'm sure some of you can tell, but I am not overly savi with all of this, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Ah, your situation does sound a bit different. I've been with Sprint since '98 and the upgrades have never expired but given your situation, I'd try to confirm with Sprint how that works in that case.

Yeah, apologies to those who responded to my original posts, I should have been more clear on my situation. I started handling my own contract, bills, picking of phones and what not last year, so I'm still figuring out the ins and outs. I didn't even know those upgrades could last over the month they're initially available...
So, thanks for being patient.

I'll have to check with Sprint later today on the terms for my last yearly upgrade, because if the Evo 3D is a possibility then I obviously have more homework to do. But worst case scenario, and I only have this month to pick a phone, what would some of you guys suggest?
