Nexus Wifi Assistant

The main setting for this is in Settings - Google - Networking ... the entry is the VPN menu is simply the entry for Google's VPN service that this accesses.

If you don't see it under the Google settings, it's probably just a function of Google's staged rollout policy and your number hasn't come up yet.

So do you have to enable both? Once in the Networking menu and once in the VPN menu?

This link will show you where you should be able to get WiFi assistant to connect in your area. This is a map that was made by Project Fi users, they'd add new locations as they were found -- so it does not have all the locations, and some locations that previously worked may not work any longer.

Edit: Looks like there is an issue with the map I linked, as the old information is not there. It looks like someone, in updating it, accidentally "erased" the old entries -- hopefully they aren't actually gone but just hidden by a filter. I'll leave the link just in case someone figures out how to fix it -- and of course, new locations can still be added.

No... Just in the Google settings. The other is basically just showing that there is a VPN registered with the system. Google connectivity services handles turning it on and off.

You certainly need to have WiFi on to get the assistant to work; doubt that you need it turned on to get the update.

One more thing.... read up on the criteria that this uses... it is very specific and is geared towards securing your WiFi connection when you are connected to a completely open public WiFi network. For those with challenge portals, capture pages, passwords, etc... this will not trigger the feature.

There was an update to Google Connectivity Services which claimed to include WiFi Assistant but I've not seen it.

Yeah, the criteria for the hotspots is pretty strict... Not sure how many totally open spots are left... Without capture portals, etc.

I should clarify - I got the update but the Networking settings page that is supposed to appear is no where to be found.

I was in the same boat after downloading, even after rebooting, but I turned off developers settings and rebooted again and the networking switch showed up.

Thanks both of you I'll do that and update this post with my results.

Edit:

Wasn't able to get it to work and that video didn't load for me. Might be my grotty internet.

Heh... Got my first WiFi Assistant connection. Pretty slick, I saw the wifi icon pop and before I could do anything about it (it had a !), a little VPN lock appeared in the status bar and I got a little "how WiFi Assistant works" notification.

Runs well too, didn't kill the throughput that I can tell. Very seamless.

Yep. I got it and have had it, me just barely noticing it. I have no idea how to get it to work though

You dont really do anything, its pretty much automatic once you enable it. When you are in range of a pre-selected Google approved wifi network, it will connect you automatically, thru a VPN.

I've been leaving my wifi on when I leave home in hopes of getting a wifi assistant connection. I'm constantly checking my phone where ever I go and I have not been able to get one single connection!!! I even made my home network open with no security and the phone wouldn't even connect to that.
