Anyone got some? I just ordered some and I purchased the NFC Launcher. Waiting for them to come so I can test it out. Anyone else messing with the NFC tags or have any good ideas on what to set?

  • I have an NFC sticker on the wall just inside the two doors to my house that I use the most, I've covered each with a small strip of paper painted in the same shade as the wall. They change WiFi/data connections and screen brightness, as well as starting Pandora playing through my house's speakers.
  • I removed the center consoles in both of my common-use cars. I placed an NFC sticker on the underside of each panel, which changes screen brightness, opens Music, and sets the phone to vibrate. It's easier to do this on some cars than on others.
  • Carefully open the stitching on the couches/lounge chairs of your family/media room, and place a tag directly under the armrest. Set the tag to launch a remote control app for your TV/receiver setup, or a channel guide for your television provider such as Comcast, Dish Network, or DirecTV.
  • I have a tag sitting next to my router which will open up a network diagnostics app when I tap my phone on it. Purely for convenience.

That's how I use NFC tags. Easy and practical. The only tag that is visible is the one next to my router. As I mentioned, the rest appear to "blend" as much as possible.

Yeah Tagstand is where I orderded mine. Thanks for that write up. I was thinking of just making a few profiles like for Home and Car. I figure these phones have NFC in them, so we can pu them to better use. Thats was good what you put, and also if anyone has any other tips, please post. Its always good to get some ideas.

I bought ten of the sticky-backed NFC tags from tagstand and they work great. I have one set up in the sunglass holder in my car, another at my desk at work and one at home. Can't beat 'em for $1.20 each.

Yeah, I ordered the hobby starter pack from Tagstand as well.

So far, I have only programmed two of them. I use one to launch night mode at night with a NFC tag near my bedside charging stand. I have NFC Tag Launcher set to launch an event in Tasker, which turns down the volume, turns off the notification light, turns off vibrations and turns up the alarm volume.

Then I have another tag set to day mode to revert the phones back to full volume, notification light on, vibrations on.

So far it works pretty well.

This is way cool. ordered the tags and purchased the app... No i wait for the tags to arrive...

Some Questions,
I like to order, for samsung galaxy nexus. But too many to choose (blank, format, type 2..etc).
I was wonder which one should work with the Gnex, I'm guessing I have to buy tag_writer to program whatever I need to do with tags.
Thanks

You have to make sure the tags are NDEF formatted. You dont have to buy the tag writer. Just download the NFC Launcher App from the market, and it can program the tags. Hence the "NFC" feature of the phone and the tag :D

I want to confirm that you dont have to buy the tag writer right, since the tags and the phone has NFC so they can be programed through the phones NFC Launcher app right? I never did this before. But I want to be prepared when they come in.

Correct. It can be done through the phone. No need for a programmer.

For those of you using the nfc tags to connect to wifi networks/change settings/etc., do you have to unlock the phone and then swipe it near the nfc tag? From the little that I've read, I think that's how it works...but I'm sure I could have go it wrong.

I use the tags to set up profiles for different tasks:
Home- Disable WiFi, Ringtone volume max, notification volume max.
Work- Enable WiFi, jump on wireless network, ringer and notification volumes low, disable Bluetooth.
Car- Enable Bluetooth, ringer and notification volumes max, media volume max, launch app CarHome Ultra (so I can decide whether to launch Pandora or stream my own music).

A few things to note:
1) You can't toggle GPS on/off through tags (at least you can't using NFC Task Launcher).
2) When buying tags, pay attention to the data limits on them. Some have only a 44 byte limit, which is about 4 "commands".
3) As previously mentioned, if you are running Android 4.0.2 you need to have NDEF formatted tags.

I have a tag in my home, pocket and car that change volumes and toggle antennas and the screen does have to be on and unlocked for the tag to read. There is no need to open the nfc app though.

The one issue I have is sometimes it takes a few waves across the nfc sticker to read. Problem is there with or without the case. I bought my tags at tagstand. The laundry token tags are unusable though, at least for me. I got one of the two that I bought to write and read one time, but it appears that the casing is just too thick for the phone to read consistently, or without looking like a fool.

I see. I figured that since that was the way Google Wallet had to be used. Does the phone make that Beep sound when you know youve successfully swiped it across a tag? Or any kind of confirmation?

Cant toggle the GPS? Well what the crap man lol. Either way, thanks for your input and your profile set up. It gives me a good idea for when I get them, what to use them for. Its a shame because its nothing super major that I can really do with them. Like the Google Wallet feature is really cool because the look on the clerks face is awesome after I flash the Gnex. Possibly in the future, there will be a better use for the NFC feature.

The only widget that I can get to toggle GPS is the powerwidget that is native to android. Any other widget takes you to the settings screen for the GPS. Apparently this is a limitation in Android to prvent apps from secretly tracking your location or something.
