No Moto X or Motomaker at my local AT&T store?

So I had to go to AT&T today to order my wife her iPhone 6 and thought I'd check out a new Moto X while I was there.

They had neither last year's nor this year's model available, but they had two Amazon Fire phones on display lol. So sad. I'm not even sure what to think about that.

To top it all off, the AT&T guy helping me didn't even know what a Moto Hint was... I'm just at a loss with AT&T right now.

Motorola needs to get it's act together and start marketing, seriously.

The phone that professional reviewers label as one of the best all around doesn't even rate a show room model, but the worst android phone had two? Really?

I drove to all the usual suspects today (Bestbuy, ATT, TMo & Vzn), and none of them had a Moto X on display. I was very disappointed. I really want to see how it looks/feels in person.

I did like last year and went straight to Moto Maker online and bypassed AT&T. Yesterday when I did the online chat with AT&T about updating the IMEI number on file and activating the sim, they didn't know where the sim drawer was on this phone - they only knew where it was on the 2013 one. AT&T is just slow when it comes to the Moto X - but they'll eventually get there and have some displays.

The two midtown Manhattan VZW stores I went to had them on display, but not like last year. There were no samples of the of the different backs and trims like they did for the 2013 model. I'm not sure what is going on with the launch of this phone. I haven't seen one TV or print ad for it.

Re: No Moto X or Motomaker at AT&T

Maybe Motorola doesn't offer training to AT&T reps on its product line. Last year I went into the downtown corporate AT&T store in San Francisco to look over a Moto X. AT&T guy greets me and asks what I want. I wanted to look at the Moto X, he said AT&T doesn't carry it. I walk around the store and guess what, the Moto X is on display. I point this out to the rep when leaving the store.

Re: No Moto X or Motomaker at AT&T

Just signed up over here to get more info on the '14 MX. I'm 99% sure I'll be getting one.

But I've tried unsuccessfully to secure one via an ATT retail outlet yet. Tonight I had a very helpful fella that tried (and then cancelled) several orders to try and find where he could get me a PIN for the online ordering. It appears that they just can't do it yet. The manager said they'll likely have to wait on cards.

I was trying to get in on the Next program, but it appears I may have to go with the two-year contract, as I'd prefer not to come out of pocket for the full amount of the phone ATM. I can, but I'd prefer not to.

Either way, unless we missed something today, you can't yet order any MX custom via the ATT retail network. Motorola clearly has the PIN system set up on their site, so I'm not sure where the rollout got delayed, but it is.

Also, when did ATT retail stores become full-time partners with Samsung and Apple exclusively. I've been in five stores this week to get some hands-on time with the MX, and in only one have I found more than 2-3 phones from brands other than Samsung or Apple. Deep pockets line deep pockets, I guess.

No Moto X or Motomaker at AT&T

Same this morning for me at an att store, no display model. They did have the Galaxy Alpha which looked really cool. Great form factor.

LOL. Well if that doesn't inspire confidence in AT&T I don't know what does!

Re: No Moto X or Motomaker at AT&T

There are two 'kinds' of AT&T stores out there. There are the Corporate AT&T stores and they are typically the larger ones with more bling and then there are contracted AT&T stores, often smaller in strip malls. They are not the same. The Corporate one typically have a well informed set of employees (I had to get a signal booster for my house, etc.) whereas the contract ones seem to have a fairly high turnover rate (at least the one nearest me does). I don't blame Moto for that, it is a carrier and outsourcing issue.

Re: No Moto X or Motomaker at AT&T

Went to Verizon and AT&T stores on Friday just to check out the new X. Verizon did have the black and the bamboo live phones on display, no advertisement of motomaker that I saw. AT&T didn't even have a live phone, just two backs cut in half (black leather and bamboo.) Disappointed in the weak marketing effort!

Re: No Moto X or Motomaker at AT&T

I went to the corporate store and they had both the MotoX and G but they were on the wall with the other android phones. I wandered around for a while before finally asking a sales person where the X was. Last time I was there the Moto X had its own display in the middle of the store with all the different customization options on display. More of a surprise is the iphone sits in the corner all by itself on a display shelf that is barely noticeable.

Re: No Moto X or Motomaker at AT&T

I stopped in at my local AT&T store on Friday, Sept 26. They had a couple backs for the new Moto X on display, but the phone was not there (nor was the 2013 version). I asked about the new Moto X and they said they've been so busy with the new iPhone sales that they haven't had time to set up the display.
Very disappointing. I wonder how many Moto sales were lost to iPhone because of situations like this.

Good question. Rep I spoke with yesterday had a similar story (iPhone traffic so heavy, he hadn't had time to play with Moto X - though theirs *was* setup and very usable). He did seem very impressed by the phone when we were messing around with it.

I had impressed another rep two days ago by doing the "OK Google" thing and pulling up the UT football live score in about 3 seconds. His eyes got big. "Wow. That's cool." Yeah. It is. That's why I want this phone. I have poor thumb coordination. I need swype and proper voice support like a real phone is supposed to have in 2014. ;)

I don't think we can will the ATT backend to give us Motocards, though. Has anyone had any luck with this yet, regardless of employee competence/turnover?

I do understand you're referring to ATT, but it shouldn't be this difficult for them to get a PIN for you. I was in my VZW store for 15mins max and had the PIN emailed almost immediately after the transcation. I have heard that it can take up to 24 hours to receive though, but you shouldn't be having an issue just acquiring one.

Well ATM, there is definitely an issue with ATT stores being able to hand out PINs. They don't have the option for a PIN/customized Moto X in their sales backend. At least not via the methods we tried yesterday. The manager of the place I was at mentioned that options either haven't been updated yet, or they'll be getting physical cards again.

edit: As soon as someone here confirms they got a PIN from an ATT retail location of any kind, I'm all ears on how to go about getting one. I've tried at three stores now. As soon as they can do it, I'm going to buy the phone. Until then, the waiting game is on.

BTW, sorry if that came off like I was doubting your story, that was not my intention. What I was driving at was to try a different store, but I see you've already tried that, TWICE. Anyhow, good luck to you. :)

Oh not at all. I figured. I responded for two reasons. One in frustration and letting others know they might encounter the same, and the second to beg for a success story so I can go get the phone I want the way I want it. :)

Although it IS possible that three separate stores might also be so absorbed with iPhone stuff that they have no idea what's happening with the Moto X. This final fella I dealt with yesterday was the first guy I thought, "Okay. I think this dude knows what he's talking about. He even went out of his way to try and bypass the system."

Either way, hopefully it gets sorted soon. After putting my paws on the phone again yesterday, I know I want it. I do not believe I have ever been excited for a phone. This would be the exception.

As a quick update, just for kicks, I visited another retail store today, chatted online at att.com and called customer service twice.

ATM, if you want a 32MB Moto X or a customized one, you currently *cannot* order one on the Next Plan.

You MUST either buy it outright or sign up for a two year plan.

That may change in coming weeks/months, but for now, I'm off of this phone until I can either buy it outright on sale, or buy it via the Next Plan. I have no idea whether Motorola or ATT (or both) dropped the ball on this, but it's definitely not helping with Moto X sales. I can't be the only one...
