Question No popup notifications for some apps

What device do you have?

You say that you're not getting "popup notifications" but do you get notifications at all? Does the app have to be open for you to get them?

My first thought when I hear issues like this is that the app may be on your device's Sleeping or Deep sleeping list. Apps on these lists will not show notifications if the app isn't open and in the foreground. In the background it's disabled. But then you don't really say that you're not getting "any" notifications just no popup ones. So I asked Google your question and got this response with a video. Have you seen this, tried this?

To enable Instagram pop-up notifications on your Android device, you need to adjust both Instagram's and your phone's notification settings. First, within the Instagram app, navigate to your profile, then Settings and Privacy > Notifications. Choose the specific notification types (like messages, posts, etc.) and ensure they are turned on. Next, check your phone's system settings: go to Settings > Apps & notifications > Instagram > Notifications. Make sure "Allow notifications" is toggled on and that you've chosen your preferred notification style, such as "Pop on screen". [1, 2, 3, 4]
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
1. Instagram App Settings:

  • Open the Instagram app.
  • Go to your profile (tap your profile picture in the bottom right).
  • Tap the three horizontal lines (Menu) in the top right.
  • Select "Settings and Privacy".
  • Tap on "Notifications".
  • Choose the notification category you want to adjust (e.g., "Posts, stories, and comments").
  • Toggle on the specific notification types within that category (e.g., "Likes," "Comments," "From people you follow").
  • Make sure "Pause all" is turned off if you want to receive notifications. [1, 1, 2, 2, 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8]
2. Android System Settings:
  • Open your phone's Settings app.
  • Tap on "Apps & notifications".
  • Find and tap on "Instagram".
  • Tap on "Notifications".
  • Ensure "Allow notifications" is toggled on.
  • Consider customizing notification sounds or other options within this section.
  • For detailed pop-up previews, go to "Advanced settings" (or similar) and choose "Pop on screen". [2, 3, 3, 4, 6, 6, 9, 9]
By adjusting both sets of settings, you should be able to get Instagram pop-up notifications as desired. [2, 3]

I may have phrased the notification question poorly.

Do you get notifications for Instagram at all? Do they show up in your notifications shade/pull down, but just no popup notification is what I was asking, I could have phrased that better.

In the meantime, I asked Google about this and it looks like it is giving the same answers we've already talked about but then suggests reaching out to Instagram devs. for more specific who may have other insight.

It can be frustrating when Instagram notifications aren't working even though other apps are. Here's a breakdown of common reasons why this might be happening and how to fix it, drawing from the provided search results:
1. Check Instagram App Notification Settings:

  • Ensure push notifications are turned on within the Instagram app. You can manage notifications for specific actions like likes, comments, and new posts from accounts you follow.
  • Navigate to your Instagram profile, then Settings > Notifications, and adjust the options there.
2. Check Device Notification Settings for Instagram:
  • Make sure Instagram has permission to send you notifications on your phone or tablet.
    • On iPhone (iOS): Go to Settings > Notifications, find Instagram, and ensure "Allow Notifications" is toggled on.
    • On Android: Go to Settings > Apps & notifications (or similar), find Instagram, and tap on Notifications. Make sure "All Instagram Notifications" is enabled.
3. Look for Potential Conflicts:
  • Do Not Disturb or Focus Mode: If you have these modes enabled, they might be silencing Instagram notifications. Disable them or adjust their settings to allow Instagram notifications.
  • Low Power Mode: Some power-saving features can limit background activity and notifications. Ensure Low Power Mode is off.
4. Clear Instagram Cache (Android):
  • Go to your Android phone's Settings app, tap on Apps & notifications, select Instagram, and tap on Clear cache.
    • Note: Be careful not to select "Clear storage," as this will delete app data and settings.
5. Background Data/App Refresh:
  • For Instagram notifications to function, Instagram needs to be able to refresh in the background.
    • On iPhone: Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and ensure it's enabled for Instagram.
    • On Android: Go to Settings > Connections > Data usage > Mobile data usage, find Instagram, and turn on "background data".
6. Restart Your Device:
  • A simple restart can often resolve minor glitches.
7. Update or Reinstall Instagram:
  • Make sure you have the latest version of the app. Outdated versions can have bugs that affect notifications.
  • If updating doesn't work, consider uninstalling and reinstalling the app.
8. Check Network Connection:
  • A strong and stable internet connection is crucial for receiving notifications.
9. Update Your Device's Operating System:
  • Ensure your phone or tablet's operating system is up to date, as updates often include bug fixes that can help with app issues.
10. Log Out and Back Into Instagram:
  • This can sometimes resolve issues with push notifications.
If you've tried all of these steps and are still experiencing issues, you may want to consider contacting Instagram customer support for more assistance.
