No sound when phone rings or receives a message.

I haven't changed any settings on my phone, and it's not on silent, but I am now missing phone calls and text messages because it won't make any sound. The volume is all the way up. I've had the phone for a year and a half and it's only started doing this in the last week.
Any suggestions?
