No update showing for January security patch on Nexus 6P

Security Update only on WiFi?

My SU is waiting but can't install because I don't have access to wifi at the moment, only LTE. It makes no sense, why can I only install thru wifi? Anyone know of a way to 'trick' phone into thinking it has wifi connection? I remember there was an app that did this on a jailbreaked iPhone. Thnx.

Your phone must have a setting checked to only download on WiFi. I don't use WiFi for anything ever... I have unlimited data Verizon and nothing around here is really faster in terms of speed so I just keep lte on and never have a problem

mine not updated yet. I find this very annoying, I bought a Nexus phone to receive the updates first and not have to keep desperately checking for an update! Screw you G00gl3!

Desperately checking for an update? For a security patch? You're a little bit wackadoodle I think there bud

Nexus 6P Updates

Hi guys!

I know there are a few threads already about this but I've been waiting for a very long time now and I am still not receiving any updates. My phone is currently on 6.0 with the November 1, 2015 security patch. I haven't gotten any update ever since and I'm a little concerned as to what I should do or if its normal. I am not rooted but I have a lot of things on my phone and losing all my data to then restore everything back would take quite some time.

Again, I haven't received the December update and that's why I am a little concerned.
Any advice?

Thanks!

Re: Nexus 6P Updates

worst case scenario you can flash factory images.
this can be done without wiping phone/losing any of your data.

short of that, whihc carrier are you using your phone with ?

Videotron, I'm in Canada. But I thought Nexus devices were unlocked and updates did not matter on the carrier. My mom has a Nexus 5 and is already on 6.0.1.

Re: Nexus 6P Updates

in the US, using an AT&T SIM sometimes prevents the update, removing the SIM and rebooting the phone without a SIM will sometimes trigger the update.

What happens when you go to settings > about phone > system updates and you click check for update ?

Not true if bootloader is locked. That's why I unlock bootloader right when I receive my new nexus. Unlocking boatloader will wipe your device. Once that is done, you can start flashing away :)

Good point! I do the same (and assume others do as well) whether or not you root or not.
I jumped to that conclusion here.

I did all that already and still on November patch. Not sure what's going on... It says Last checked: "TIME"

well, that indicates something amiss, as it should show you an actual time when it was last checked.
did you modify the system time at all on the phone?

No I wrote "TIME" because I dont know the actual last time it checked it was like 3:36 PM

Yeah....nope. Message says download available Jan 30th on cellular or connect now to wifi. There are no settings governing this.

A second reason Google rolls out the update in batches is because, unlike Apple, they allow updates over a cellular connection. The roll out was originally created, at least in part, because cell providers had concerns of their networks being overloaded if everyone tries to download the update at one time, particularly everyone in one geographic area.

Sorry but it seems your only option may be to do a factory reset. Then check for updates before putting your sim in. See if that works.

Just a simple factory reset in Settings?

Edit: You're my hero, I love you. First notification when my phone booted up was "System update available: Android 6.0.1"

Thanks again!

Edit2: Will I have to do this for every upcoming update?

Hello. I just read somewhere that google has released security patches for January for its supported Nexus devices. I haven't received any OTA update yet. I also read on developers-dot-google that flashing the factory image with the security patches will erase all user data, and I definitely do not want to be tinkering with my phone so early in its life cycle (I have had it only a week, sorry I am a bit conservative that way lol). I am in New Zealand, and the box my phone came in had common information for Australia and New Zealand (as is the case with most things here in NZ :p). Any ideas when the update would appear OTA?

It can also depend on carrier. Unlike other phones its based on the sim carrier not where phone was purchased. Since your in NZ I assume you may have got the phone through 2degrees. 2degrees does do testing on updates for nexus to make sure all works with the network.
You may not have the upate yet becuase either google is doing a staggered roll out or google is awaiting 2Degrees testing.
There is not exactly new features in this update so why not just wait for it to roll out?
Ive heard changing to a skinny sim to install updates can speed it up and then change back once installed. As skinny doesn't have to approve updates.. But haven't tried it personally

My 6p still has not received the January update. My old 6p (had to send it back for issues) received it???

Is this odd? Shouldn't I have received the update by now? Does anyone still not have it?

I still don't have it and this phone has always been on project Fi so I doubt a carrier issue.
